It's an hour and a half from my home and it's one of two places where I can set and shoot targets further than 100 yards. Owned by the city and operated by the Carson Rifle and Pistol Club. Until very recently RSOs were posted occasionally on weekends but it was open 7 days regardless.
Around Thanksgiving apparently someone with no brains shot over the top of the hill behind the 300 yard backstops so that bullets impacted on the trash dump. This was witnessed by the now former president of the CRPC and one other individual. It's part of the reason that the range is now open only when CRPC can provide at least one RSO to keep the inmates in line, which has reduced availability to weekends and it means the place is going to be very crowded on Saturdays and Sundays. It didn't help that there were two fires at Carson over the summer, presumably from shooting.
Although I only go there occasionally, I liked the fact that Carson was open 7 days, unlike the Washoe facility north of Reno which is about the same drive time but is only opened Friday through Monday. It was my alternative when a range that's closer is buried in snow.
I often have the nearby range to myself but there is the typical problem with trash. Last weekend I was told by another shooter I ran into that a group brought in a bunch of beer cans over the weekend before New Years, shot them up, and then left the mess. On another occasion in August, someone set out exploding targets and shot them. Neither NFS nor the BLM allow exploding targets and in any event, anyone with half a brain would realize that exploding targets are an especially bad idea during fire season. I often wonder how long it will be before that range is also closed.

For all the talk about California's gun laws, IMHO the biggest threat to 2A in this state is not having any place to shoot. I don't own my rifles so they can collect dust. I own them to shoot them. If there's no place to shoot, I guess I'll have to get rid of them.

I realize I'm preaching to the choir here. If you're reading this, chances are you bring in targets and you pack out trash. For my part, I'm gonna be a little more "proactive" about encouraging people to take their crap with them after they're through playing, even if that means getting the NFS law enforcement folks involved. It makes no sense to turn a blind eye if the result is losing the only convenient place to shoot.
2A lets us own firearms, but it doesn't provide any guarantees we can use them for sporting purposes. I think the onus for keeping shooting ranges open by helping to deal with the few bad actors falls on us.
Thanks for listening.
