A Cautionary Tale: Carson City Gun Range

It's an hour and a half from my home and it's one of two places where I can set and shoot targets further than 100 yards. Owned by the city and operated by the Carson Rifle and Pistol Club. Until very recently RSOs were posted occasionally on weekends but it was open 7 days regardless.

Around Thanksgiving apparently someone with no brains shot over the top of the hill behind the 300 yard backstops so that bullets impacted on the trash dump. This was witnessed by the now former president of the CRPC and one other individual. It's part of the reason that the range is now open only when CRPC can provide at least one RSO to keep the inmates in line, which has reduced availability to weekends and it means the place is going to be very crowded on Saturdays and Sundays. It didn't help that there were two fires at Carson over the summer, presumably from shooting.

Although I only go there occasionally, I liked the fact that Carson was open 7 days, unlike the Washoe facility north of Reno which is about the same drive time but is only opened Friday through Monday. It was my alternative when a range that's closer is buried in snow.

I often have the nearby range to myself but there is the typical problem with trash. Last weekend I was told by another shooter I ran into that a group brought in a bunch of beer cans over the weekend before New Years, shot them up, and then left the mess. On another occasion in August, someone set out exploding targets and shot them. Neither NFS nor the BLM allow exploding targets and in any event, anyone with half a brain would realize that exploding targets are an especially bad idea during fire season. I often wonder how long it will be before that range is also closed.

For all the talk about California's gun laws, IMHO the biggest threat to 2A in this state is not having any place to shoot. I don't own my rifles so they can collect dust. I own them to shoot them. If there's no place to shoot, I guess I'll have to get rid of them.

    [/rant off]

I realize I'm preaching to the choir here. If you're reading this, chances are you bring in targets and you pack out trash. For my part, I'm gonna be a little more "proactive" about encouraging people to take their crap with them after they're through playing, even if that means getting the NFS law enforcement folks involved. It makes no sense to turn a blind eye if the result is losing the only convenient place to shoot.

2A lets us own firearms, but it doesn't provide any guarantees we can use them for sporting purposes. I think the onus for keeping shooting ranges open by helping to deal with the few bad actors falls on us.

    Thanks for listening.

Do you pick up more than came with you ?

It's a sad thing, but you can't seem to fix stupid, so help the cause, teach when you can, pick up others crap when you can't, or both.

Only you can prevent range closure's ..

I belong to a member's only range that costs a pretty good piece of change to belong to and the members still leave trash and broken targets/frames laying about. You'd think a defined group that has exclusive use of the facilities would clean up after themselves, but not so.

It is an attitude of selfishness that is prevalent in this country now and manifests itself everywhere, even in the shooting sports.

I always carry extra bags and give them to shooters that I talk to. I inform them that if we leave this place a mess, they will close it. I ask that they inform others and carry trash bags to give to others. But as stated above ^
You can't fix stupid, but we need to try.

Great post. I shoot at the Pinenut range in Gardnerville. Most of the time things are clean but I have ventured out to pick up chit that people left out there. Douglas Co SO qualifies out there a few times weekly and don't need any complaints that they arrived to a trashy shooting area.
I have also been pretty outspoken about shooters using large rocks to keep their target stands from blowing over in the wind.

The club that runs Carson needs to improve in their outreach and attitude or else they are going to be extinct. I used to shoot there monthly. Their directions on requirements for using the bays is vague and when I asked for clarification I caught attitude.

So here is one RSO who was going to donate time and money to them that won't lift a finger to help them now.

I'll tell you right now that a whole lot of local shooters will not go to the range as long as the Carson Rifle and Pistol Club is in charge, no one is happy over these idiots taking the range over.

Was going down there at least once a week till this happened. Most of the people shooting there left a mess. The tactical bays where nice to use.
No way am I going down there on a week end. Been told the Washoe county range North of Reno is a lot nicer. Once weather clears up will try BLM.

That's the problem, nobody should have to pack out more than they brought. You bring it in you take it out, not a difficult concept. It's disgusting that there's a sizable segment of the adult population with no concept of personal responsibility that somehow expects their mommy to follow around behind them and clean up their mess forever. It's pathetic.

I just had an idea for T-shirt, or a poster, or both...

Picture of a shooter holding a weapon.

Above him are the words, "Only You"

Below the pic are the words, "Can Prevent Range Closures"

I always police my range for trash and brass. I like to leave it nice for the next guy.

Seabees built that range years back as their weekend duty. You used to have to drive across the dump scales to sign in and out of that range. Eventually I think they put in a bypass. At least they used to keep an outhouse out there!!!! And the range seemed clean and cared for, I think you can check the sheriffs website for days the ranges is closed.

Had a Dr. friend that had a "private" range he built north of Minden east of Buckeye Rd on BLM or NFS lands, it's where we took his Class 3's I think it went out 400 yds with a gong at that distance various target stand in between, he actually would go camping there as well.. He moved up to WA. Dan from Sunrise Pass Arms actually found the range when he was out hunting.

Unless they closed off the "backdoors" also there ARE other ways in besides the dump road.

They did some paving on the road late summer. Less choppy going in/out.
