Hoppes or Outers gun oil, very lightly applied. Too much lube attracts dirt and other contaminants and is not necessary.

Hoppes #9 to clean. It’s worked just fine for me for 50 years, including 32+ years of duty carry and 7 more of retired daily carry.

would Vaseline Petroleum Jelly work instead of grease for gun lube?

just a small amount on the slide lugs on a Glock? or used to grease a bolt action rifle.

when I was touring Navy / US Coast Guard Ships during Fleet Week several years ago, I noticed the "MINI GUN" was covered in what looked like a clear grease that looked like Vaseline Petroleum Jelly? to protect from corrosion, they also wrapped plastic Saran wrap over it.

the large ship's anchor chain was also covered in the same stuff

Doesn't need to be fancy, just two metal parts rubbing together.
