Stay out of all domestic disputes, especially divorces. Your wife's friend has an attorney, let the attorney do his or her job. Anything she says to you about her soon to be ex or the divorce can cause you to end up in court to testify as to what she told you and get you involved in the drama.
Add to this you are only hearing her side of the story. You have no way to know exactly what happen to the guns and you and your wife have no right to that information. That is for the court, the DA, and the attorneys to deal with.
If he is threatening her, she needs to file a police report and include in the report what she believes happened to the guns.
There is way too much speculation and the legal system does not operate on speculation. The legal rights of all get to be protected so there has to be hard evidence and proof.
As others have said, back in 1981, paperless transfers were legal. I am old enough to have bought a few guns they way they are still bought in free states from private parties. You meet up, the buyer hands the money to the seller and the seller hands the gun to the buyer and both go on their way.
My first rifle was bought in Kmart, off the shelf and paid for at the cash register. That was here in Santa Cruz, CA. it was my birthday present when I turned 11. I picked it out and mom paid for it. I still have it and there is no paperwork on it.
That was the way things were done when America was free.
