Anyone here hunt with a red dot? Question

I hunt pigs with a 6.8, my hunting partner says he is working on getting a dep. permit so I put my beast on the scale, it was at 9.5 lbs.! So I am thinking of putting a red dot on it a aimpoint 2moa. Now it is about 8.5 lbs. The shots we normally have are 25- 150 yards.

Why not? Many cross bows have them.

If a red dot sight works for squirrels and rabbits, it should work well with pigs.

I'm considering this myself for my lightweight carbine. Right now it has a 1.5-4x, but I'm moving that optic to my competition rifle and with using my carbine for home defense I really want the advantages of a red dot.

I'll be going hog hunting in Texas this spring and plan on trying a flip over magnifier at similar distances. Last time I went I felt magnification was necessary to make more ethical accurate shots with the 5.56 I use.

Have you considered a lightweight upper build? I rarely hunt from a stand and those ounces really add up walking around, so I've ended up with a 6 lbs bolt action in 5.56 and the AR carbine comes in at 6.5 lbs with a LW 16" barrel.

Put what ever sights you like on your rifle. Take it to the range. If you can consistently hit a playing card at 100 yards, you can use that set up for hunting.

I'm not a hunter so no personal experience but I've generally heard from hunters consistently being able to hit a 6 inch paper plate at 100 yards is good enough to get deer in the vitals at typical distances. No?

I'd much rather have a low power scope. Dot intensity requirements change with lighting conditions and most are non-magnifying. I'd rather have a scope with magnification.

I was sure a red dot aimpoint pro would be perfect for coyotes but I immediately realized I wanted magnification after trying it in the field. It’s nice to really zoom in on the exact spot you want to place the bullet instead of aiming for center mass.

You may get to zoom in on the first hog, then it's a free-for-all.
You'll want a low power red dot. One of my hog rifles is a Armalite AR-10(T) 16" carbine (an absolute laser beam!). It has a Aimpoint CompC3- 2X, 1 moa dot. Two power is just fine within 100 yards. Depending on the terrain / landscape I back it up with a Aimpoint 3 power magnifier on a Sampson flip mount. That way I can go from a 2 power to 6 power quickly. If I am in heavy landscape, then I 'quick disconnect' the magnifier and put it in my pack.
If you don't already, practice shooting with both eyes open with that red dot. It will come in handy for hogs.
The true Aimpoint products are damn near bullet proof. While I have discovered the Trijicon RMR's, the Aimpoints have them beat in wet weather.
No matter what red dot you will buy, new or used, do your homework to recognize the counterfeits. They are everywhere, Amazon & E-bay especially.

The playing card at the range will become the 6" plate in the field. The general rule of thumb is that accuracy goes down by 2X when the adrenaline kicks in: home defense or hunting.
