When I leave CA for a better state.

I obviously have some requirements, mainly work related as I can carry my salary to new states, CC or OC states I can find on the internet.

One main dream is what state would I be able to have a shooting range on my property granted it's not in a major city. I know it might be silly but ever since I got into the firearms and reloading I'd like to be able to shoot right in the backyard. This isn't a most gun friendly like post but more of a quality of shooting life thread. Not to mention whatever state I find would already be a gun friendly state if I could have my dream locale.

Whn I leave California, that's after I retire and start collecting what I've been working hard for, sell my home here and worry about guns and shooting after

Almost any state including CA has property where you can shoot off your porch legally. The typical requirement is living outside city limits, no HOA, and similar minded neighbors.

That being said, how you use your range will depend on how close to civilization and neighbors you can be when shooting. Plinking with suppressed subsonic can be done on a small lot with neighbors nearby. Machine gun and long range will require neighbors at least 1 mile away too avoid annoying them. If you are working on centerfire rifle load development then at least a 100 yard range and neighbors 1/4 mile away from your property line. They can be closer if you install sound mitigation.

I could build a house on my range but it is a good 40 minute drive to my sons school and 30 minutes from the outskirts of the city. Just not convenient at the moment for me and since it remains unimproved my taxes are $100/yr. so after my initial cheap investment it costs me almost nothing to shoot there. It also serves as a getaway spot so I can leave the city and camp on my land with no one bothering me. Just being in a place with no electronics is nice. Sometimes I go there and don't even shoot. I hike or wheel or just sit in a chair and listen to the wind and animals.

I would like to live in either Carson City, or Mindon/Gardnerville Nevada. This is on Hwy 395 and really all the way down to the border at Topaz lake is good. No state income tax, cheaper gas, very low DMV fees, little diversity issues, fairly reasonable housing still, and low crime.

I live in the foothills and have my own shooting range here at home but this entire state is just to out of touch with reality. Guess I will go out and blow off some steam.

You will need to avoid towns, city limits, and water districts as sheriffs use those limits to define inhabited areas and reduce shooting areas they have to deal with.

Once you get a private shooting range, you wont really want to go to the public range.
I had to go to the public range to qualify for my ccw yestery day (in NV).
First time I've gone to a range in years. It was a good range, but I had to drive 15 minutes, whereas I could walk out my garage and shoot, walk out my back door and shoot. I will be building a proper range once I get some equipment here. Can hardly wait!

                      I know, right.

There was one funny bit in the first paragraph, though:

Molossia, officially the Republic of Molossia, is a claimed micronation bordering the United States, founded by Kevin Baugh (born July 30, 1962) and headquartered at his home near Dayton, Nevada. The Republic of Molossia has claimed itself a nation but it is not recognised as a country by the United Nations or any major government...

Kevin Baugh continues to pay property taxes on the land to Storey County (the recognized local government), although he calls it "foreign aid."

The rest of it is totally WTF.

Meanwhile, a man like audiophil is living the dream. That's what I'm aiming for: a chunk of land I can bail to, simply to shoot and/or hang out in a chair and just stare at the view...

                      .

Now get a grip. The ONLY time I met a CalGunner in CA who could shoot off his front porch was a big time farmer in Los Banos with 10,000 acres around his house. VERY few people live far enough into the sticks to shoot off their front porch. And even IF you could find a place like that, what are the odds your family/wife will WANT to live that far out.

California has plenty of places where you can shoot from your porch, if you move away from the cities. 150yds to occupied structure (not under your control) is required.
Pennsylvania is the same, Connecticut is 500’.
