Gun cleaning

There are some guns, such as Glocks, that are rather simple. Instead of spending a long time cleaning them with tiny patches and dentist's tools, I wonder if I could use carburetor spray to clean them as I can get this stuff for free. Purely in theory, it should even be possible to put the barrel and the slide into a bucket of solvent, such as Acetone, and let 'em soak overnight, then blow 'em out with compressed air.

What's YOUR take on this rather radical approach?

I do things in a simpler way. I use gun cleaner on guns, and carburetor cleaner on carburetors.

It prevents issues later if you need warranty work on your firearms.

Way over thinking a cleaning. As 17+1 said just run a patch and oil basically.

I do detailed break downs, cleaning, & oiling for people whose guns have gotten nasty and I don't use anything other that Eezox or CLP with the occasional copper fouling cleaner. Rarely do I do any soaking other than a heavy wiping and let sit under a heat lamp. The really heavy duty nasty stuff gets the ultra sonic bath with a mixture of water, soap, and Hoppes. A water rinse back in the ultra sonic and a long blast with the compressor, followed by a healthy treatment of Eezox. I am talking about people who never cleaned their guns and let them sit in a closet for 10 years then decided to go to the range one day.

Patches, toothbrush, Q-tips, and a rag will solve more of your cleaning issues than not.

Keep carb cleaners and the like to vehicles.

I use break cleaner (non-chlorinated) to clean after I brush to loosen the gunk. Run a bore snake after and a few Q-tips to make sure I got it all then lube.

Much faster than my old method of brush, soaking in CLP, running patches, dentist tools etc..

Over cleaning is a bigger problem than under cleaning. I've never used anything more than Slips EWL, an old toothbrush, the included bore rod-brush and patches from an old t shirt.

That's it and I've never had a malfunction of any kind in my Gen 4 G23.

I just follow the directions for field stripping, clean and lube for my Gen 3 G17. Have not had any issues.

Bore brush, small brush, patches and some cleaner, reassemble, safety and function checks, wipe down--done.

There are plastic safe gun cleaning sprays that work rather well. I use them all the time. Make sure you pick out the serious gunk first and lubricate afterwards.

I do about the same on my 9mm Shield about every couple of months, only I brush the gunk first, then I use WD-40 on the lower and then use a air compressor to blow it all out.

Have ran over 7,000 round through it in the last 5 years and runs without a hiccup !

no fancy gun cleaning supplies needed, a can of WD40 & a old t-shirt for a rag and making cleaning patches works great

I would never use a harsh chemical like carb cleaner on a polymer gun

I use Gun Butter on the lubrication points

What are you cleaning and cleaning with? Soaking is something I've done for a few minutes before brushing or wiping away. I rarely clean my guns, I just lube after I shoot and probably field strip and clean after a few thousand rounds. Hoppes has served me well, I've used Otis and breakfree which worked as well and don't see any need out of the firearms market to clean with. I've heard many raves about motor oil to lube as well as lithium grease which I do use but other than that I'd stay away from solvents that contain god knows what in them.

Took a while for that to come up. I know guys who deliberately don't clean their Glocks. I field-strip and clean every gun if it has been fired. The less ammo went through, the easier to clean.

On another note . . . of course I wouldn't put the plastic frame in a barrel of carb or brake cleaner! I'm talking about the barrel and the slide, all of which are 100% steel.

I don't clean my guns except for before a class. In the mean time, i could accumulate many hundreds to a thousand or two thousand rounds
