Question about gun ownership

I was asked by someone if the guns I own are registered to me. I couldn't really answer the question. I don't really know.

I certainly purchased them legally. DROS check was done. Serial number is listed on the DROS form along with my information. But is this information logged in a national database? I don't think so but not sure.

They are, but that data resides primarily with the CA DOJ.

The only real advantage to any of this is if stopped by a peace officer who, since you're not carrying concealed, sees the locked container visible in your vehicle (again, since you're not carrying concealed) and asks if that firearm belongs to you.

He may verify this, or he may not, but either way it *looks* better to him than if you say something else...

You know where I'm going with this; it lends credibility to your show. Other than a peace officer, who the hell is asking? It's none of their business (unless it's your wife). No one THESE DAYS should know how many firearms you own. I consider it a security risk.

Handguns, yes, they know you have them. Long guns, kinda iffy. Supposedly prior to 2014, long gun records only resided with the gun store. But others have said that when doing a DOJ search, their long guns that were purchased years ago, showed up on their record of firearms they had purchased, so.....

Maybe I'm going out on a limb here, but, other than RAW's, no, no guns are "registered" to you. Handguns sold by a dealer after 1924, and long guns sold after 2014, were required to go through the DROS process. In 1991 all private party sales of handguns (2014 for long guns) required DROS. This means that your name and the serial number/description of those guns is connected to your name at CADOJ. Is that defacto registration, some say yes and some say no. My apologies if some of the dates are off.

The Cal DOJ database is worse than useless. I requested mine; not close to accurate.

I thought there was a SCOTUS ruling that Government maintaining a list of gun owners was unconstitutional, course something like that doesn't really matter in California.

You can request an Automated Firearms System Record Request through the Cal DOJ. You can go to the DOJ site and download the form along with instructions. My letter, dated July, 2013 says specifically that the "DOJ does not retain information regarding sales of rifles or shotguns..."

The list I received covered my handguns although there were errors in the accuracy (some guns I had sold were still listed, some I bought through FFLs were not).

But that all changed in 2014 with the state requirement to "register" all long guns. RAWs are treated differently, obviously.

I believe California has a record of every pistol purchased since at least when I started buying them I went for my CCW one time and wanted to add a pistol that I had t brought serial w me, officer was real cool and said he'd look it up. It didn't show and he said he could only see the first 15 IIRC. Mind you I didn't own that many, which means even ones I've sold are still showing as being connected to me at one point. Not cool.

Thanks guys. I guess this would seem like an odd question out of context. It came from a person I know. We were having a conversation about guns. Not political. He wants me to take him to the range to shoot. I asked him if he was considering buying a gun and the conversation went from there and eventually this question was asked.

That's what your answer should be: "My guns are legally purchased." These types of intrusive questions don't deserve a detailed answer. Like when people ask me how many guns I have, to me that's the same as asking how much money is in my bank account. Nunya biznizz. IMO, people (unless they're LEO) asking those sorts of questions are just Gladys Kravitz busybodies, and if they are LEO then they can run the serials themselves.
