Can't get Rem 600 fixed in recall?

So I have an inherited Rem 600. Very light and accurate carbine in 308. Remington has settled a class action suit about getting their triggers fixed from going off un-expectantly. Old news apparently, but not something my Dad was aware of. When I contacted Remington, all I was offered was $12.50 in Remington branded merchandise. They wouldn't fix the trigger.

Why would I want to advertise anything by Remington when they leave me with an unsafe gun?

Is there any other recourse? Looks like Timney Triggers are about $160.

Not sure how old your 600 is, ok, i looked it up.

"Remington Arms Model 600 was a push-feed bolt-action rifle produced by Remington Arms from 1964–1968. While it is commonly believed that production ended in 1967, according to Remington representatives records indicate that it actually ended in 1968. Wikipedia"

Is that $12.50 a T shirt or the parts for trigger fix??

Remington is being nice If they are offering to send parts that can fix it 50 years later.!!

What do you expect them to fix? The recall is only on the problem triggers of certain years of the Remington 700 model, that use the X pro trigger. And if I remember correctly those are manufactured sometime between 2006 and 2014.

"In 1979, Remington instituted a recall for Model 600 and 660 rifles made before February, 1975, because, under certain circumstances, the safety and trigger could be manipulated in a way that could result in an accidental discharge. Under the 1979 recall program, owners of the affected rifles could return their guns for installation of a new trigger assembly at no charge. Since 1979, thousands of the affected firearms have been serviced under the 1979 recall and received new trigger assemblies."

Have an all original 660 my dad gave me about 40 years ago. It has never gone off unexpectedly, but he did say be sure to always keep it and all firearms pointed in safe direction when he gave it to me.

It would be great if there is nothing wrong, keeping things stock is usually what I want anyway (I have an old ruger 44 mag that I keep stock and the hammer down on an empty chamber.) and having to ship the things off and wait for a few months isn't exactly handi either. Am not looking for derision or the hubris of someone telling me how my pappy didn't teach me right. Just want a safe gun that I and family can use for hunting. If there is a link about how this all works and why the recall wasn't necessary that would be great. Having the gun fire when taking off the safety just before taking a shot at a deer isn't my idea of effective hunting.

Otherwise is there a trigger replacement people like? Some of my other Remingtons and Springfields have Timneys that seem to work well. Some on the internet like something called Basix?

Yeah, that's the key. If you're really that worried, just don't take the safety off unless pointed in a safe direction. Which should be your default mode of operation with any gun. The person that sued Remington for the 700 trigger was an idiot. They pointed the rifle at a trailer and then took the safety off. There was a family member on the other side of the trailer and the bullet went right through the trailer, killing the family member.

I have Timney, Jewell and Rifle Basix triggers, and they all work great. I would go for the least expensive that meets your needs as far as trigger pull weight.

So you're asking them to do a recall repair when the recall was 40 years ago? Do you really think Toyota still doing the recall on the head gaskets of the 3 liter V6 engines?

Funny you call the plaintiff an idiot, but have no words for the corporation making a rifle that discharges when disengaging the safety, without touching the trigger.

A safety that malfs is worse than no safety.

Who would do that? And refuse to fix them until sued? Remingtion.

And who would fault the consumer instead? Remington fanbois. That's who.

OP, Timney triggers are excellent. If Remington won't provide you with a reliable safety, just buy a Timney and be done with it. Wait for a Black Friday sale.

He11 yes. Triggers don't wear out like engines do.

I expect Remington to 1) not sell safeties which discharge when disengaged, and 2) if the do (and they did) I expect them to correct that.
