Carb cleaner is (at least used to be and probably still is in Free States) acetone.
I've used some gun cleaners that have left polymer frames "sticky", though they were fine later.

Hoppes and Mobil 1 is my method. Clp is ok but I think it compromises in all arenas.

Re: carb cleaner vs brake cleaner

MAF cleaner is best: plastic safe and doesn't leave residue...

If I have fired cast lead bullets in my pistols, I usually patch with Hoppes, then brush, dry patch a few times, then apply Kroil and let it sit for an hour or two. The Kroil seems to get under the leading or perhaps soften it, but in any case,. brushing after Kroil gets the lead out. Then Another run with a patch of Hoppes and done.

I have started not cleaning my rifles as often. I wait until accuracy begins to suffer, then dry patch, then Hoppes or Butch's Bore Shine, let sit a while, brush with a stiff nylon bore brush, dry patch to get dirt out, then Hoppes patch again, dry patch and repeat until I get no more powder fouling out. Then I use Wipe Out and let sit for a couple hours or sometimes overnight. Dry patch until clean. I don't usually leave any oil in the bore.

I never let any "action blaster," carb cleaner, brake cleaner, etc anywhere near my guns. They remove all oil and lube, leaving pure bare metal wide open to rust. For cleaning actions on semi-auto .22 rifles and pistols or even a quick action cleaning on centerfire and shotgun semiauto actions, I use Hornady One Shot Cleaner and Dry Lube. With the tube installed, it blasts crude out pretty well and leaves a dry lube and protectant behind. It has actually withstood rust and salt corrosion better than some specific rust preventatives in many independent tests.
