If you lived in any other state you would have the Norinco 84S-1 to choose from.

Best of both worlds AK in .223

the problem with buying one of them, is the mags are too expensive and not readily available

As a fan of Ruger I have to say the Mini's suck for the money. They are a 2 MOA gun at best out of the box and way overpriced. Minute of man? Sure they are. Minute of coyote? Inside of 100 yards yes, beyond that you better have a good one.

I can't justify the price for what you get with them. The one good thing I can say is all 4 of mine chewed up and spit out whatever I feed them.

I should say I only have tried the mini 14's.

Or does it make more sense to get the M14 setup shown in the picture?

I dont want to put a scope on it either maybe just a eotech red dot at most. Im not sure if the grip is legal either...smh

Why get that mini set up is it because it resembles the m 14?
That fake gas cylinder under the barrel will throw off the barrel harmonics

That's the point, the barrel harmonics are so bad on the Mini 14 that you add weight to the barrel to help.

Wow, is that set up at least tunable? Ie the block that's between the barrel and cylinder able to slide forward and back to adjust the harmonics.

It's not just the thin barrel Mini but most all thin barrels. It's the reason the old bolt action military rifles have pressure point on barrel near the end of their stocks. It's so they will have better accuracy for more than 3 to 5 shots with a lighter weight barrel, the stock is the strut. The way the bayonet lug attaches to an M1 Carbine kind of does the same thing as a strut by extending the stocks pressure point on the barrel. The stock plays big part in accuracy of rifles like the Mini, M14, M1 Garand, M1 Carbine and bolt action rifles and why people don't use plastic stocks in shooting competitions, but wood or fiberglass stocks when using those type rifles and heavy barrels if they can.

I don't think it's the stock or barrel weight. My high speed footage indicated the heavy mass of the OP rod slamming violently back and forth created excessive vibration throughout the action and barrel.

You can treat the symptom with a stiffer stock and barrel, but the problem is inherent to the gas system and op rod. The most accurate minis I've seen have adjustable or tamed gas systems.

Gas system or not stiffer stock is what is needed and why the most accurate bolt action shooters don't use plastic stocks. Stiffer stock will tame actions vibrations no matter where the gas system is set, so if you adjust gas system it'll have even less vibrations than doing same in a plastic stock.

Same with barrel, a thicker stiffer barrel tames the vibrations. It's why all the precision and bench rest shooters use heavy barrels. They're using heavy enough barrels they don't need to use pressure point in stock as a strut to tame whippy thin barrels vibrations.

You are comparing apples to oranges there, the best precision rifles are also free floating their barrels, something impossible with the Mini. The Mini is an inherently inaccurate rifle, that's why it costs thousands to get one to shoot even close to the accuracy of a $700 AR 15.

Accurizing a Mini 14 is like trying to turn a Camry into an off road vehicle.

You're just not understanding how things work. The only difference between Mini, M1 Garand, M14 and M1 Carbine is their gas systems and they clamp to the stock instead of bolt to the stock like in bolt actions. I tried to explain to you about the pressure points they used in bolt actions with thin barrels to improve accuracy. It's the same concept except using a strut with the Mini and the heavier barrel they use on the new ones does away with need for a strut same as heavy barrel in bolt action does away with need for pressure point.

I didn't spend thousands on my Mini and can shoot it just as good as an AR with peep sights on both. The only thing my ARs have over my Mini is I can use a scope on ARs and not the Mini.

IIRC the mini 14 has rear peep sight which makes it more desirable than the AK .
Since I don't own either I cannot address accuracy. Although being a range student I can truthfully say it's rare to see someone who is capable of hitting a man sized target at 100 yards unless it's off a bench !

The Ruger has been a choice of some very serious shooters, not all who could be considered models for RKBA! No I did NOT mean the Stockton POS who should have been stopped by a parent!

They are both abysmal sights compared to an M14 or A2.
