Guns are surface rusting while in safe - Live near beach

    Hello,

What are some other options to prevent surface rust while I store my guns?

Im in San Diego about 10min from the beach and it has been a humid year. The safe is already filled with a LOT of desiccant packs and I oil them(very light coat) before i store them or as I notice rust when I pull them out. But I will get rust pretty quick, 7-10 days after shooting.

My safe doesn't have a 120v hookup(id have to install one) or I would have gone mini dehumidifier route already.

    Get rid of the moisture.
    Never wd-40.
Break free. Or better is break free collectors with high wax content
    Use gloves.
    Wipe every x months

get a digital hygrometer so you can monitor saturation of dessicant packs. I use silicone sleeves after coating with Corrosion X.

Grab one of those flat tin cans that are sold with desiccant like material inside. You can bake them in your oven to "reset" them later on.

WD40 actually works quite well. When I worked for a firearms manufacturer, we used that to spray down all the rifles to prevent them from rusting while in storage or shipping. Sure, there are better products out there, but none as cheap as we bought it in 5 gallon tubs at a time.

maybe you need more desiccant packs in there?

heck, buy it by the bulk, and just hang a nylon legging filled to the size of a baseball.

or buy those electronic ones that recharges by plugging it into the wall.

I use a couple plug in renewable desiccants with the vents and hang them in the open areas of the safe, they work much better for me than the packs.

Also, I wipe down with ballistol before a coat of light oil or grease. Otherwise the oil just traps moisture in.

Golden Rod. Dessicant packs (rechargeable or the ones in buckets).
                    Good gun lube / oil.

Goldenrod dehumidifier. I live ON THE WATER and have two 24 inch goldenrods in the safe.. one down low and one high. Everything stays warm and toasty and no rust of any kind at all.

How about an Eva-Dry? It works pretty good for my safe.

One part of USMC firearms maint I have gleefully moved away from is turning rifles into the armory with a "light coat" of anything. I ain't planning on personally invading Iraq any time soon so any surface feature I fear might rust gets a healthy dose of (WD40/CLP/Gun Oil), excess shaken off, and then stored.

I generally make extra sure the gap between the gas block and barrel is saturated, internals of the muzzle device, dust cover bits and bobs, and fwd assist bits. BBL & BCG are melonited (and still get some oil on/in them) but those other parts are just parked steel so I keep 'em wet(ish).

Everytime I do this I think "suck it, Corporal XYZ", who ran the armory at my unit.

Try Eva-Dry. It has dry/wet indicator so that you know when to charge it when it's no longer able to absorb moisture. I have two of each per safe.

Try some weatherstripping on the jamb of the door so air doesn't easily move between the inside of the safe and outside.
