Muzzle Brakes ,optic mounts, grips , side charging upper receiver on the left side......

Bi pod mounts, removable sling mounts, hand gun racks for safe storage, trigger guards just things that come to mind quickly lol.

Not saying machine tools are everything, but it will show your level of what quality is by what you use.
Most here won't have a clue, especially the ones that you have done work for.

Machine up a whole bunch of DIAS and give to friends as keychain ornaments. Tell them all that they are bottle openers.

After you do an AR, I'd start looking for a gunsmith special firearms and see what you can do with them. I only have a mini-mill and mini-lathe in my shop (corner of the garage) and I recently converted an old shot out No. 1 Mk III Lee Enfield to 32 S&W. Pulled the barrel, chopped off a stub, set the barrel back, created a reamer, etc. Shoots well enough for a tin can plinker. Now I'm working on another Enfield conversion, this one to 7.62x39.

Lots off good machining projects and ideas over at weaponsguild.com.

You should build a sten gun. Those things are super cool rustic looking firearms.

Here are a few pix of the 32 S&W rifle in progress. I chambered it for 32 S&W Long. This is a single shot so I since cut down the mag and riveted on a floor plate. There is an extractor but no ejector so the bolt will extract the spent brass and and then drop it in the empty mag for reloading later. Once I set the barrel back it was a little too short so I silver soldered on an extension to get it back to 16". I still need to finish it and I'm thinking Alumnahyde. It test fires fine with both 32 S&W and 32 S&W Long. I soldered on some sights I made by hand and just need to zero it to hit tin cans at 25 yards, then I'll stick a fork in this one and call it done.

I dont have an AR yet but am planning to get one so AR accessories or parts would be okay

                              Same for shotguns.

                              Maybe handguns too.

                              Okay so any firearm project.
If you have a lathe at home, and fancy starting to work with steel after you finish cutting your teeth on easy aluminum stuffs, a great project is refurbishing or customizing ruger single action revolvers.

                              They are cheap
                              Parts are readily available
Documentation is available (Ruger workshop manual vol 1 and 2)
Guns are overbuilt so you can shoot your handiwork with confidence
Fewer moving parts than an AR
All parts can fit loosely and you have a factory-like piece, or you fit everything like a fine puzzle and make a Ruger run like a fine watch.
                              No aluminum.

I rarely see beater ruger single actions for sale for a few bucks, and I'm betting this is why. Easy and fun to refurbish.

                              --------------

Some of the skills you can practice that you won't if you just play with AR's

                              barrel muzzle profile cutting
                              crowning
                              proper barrel torquing
barrel set back (easier success criteria than a rifle)
                              parts fitting
                              dovetail cutting (if wanted)
                              D&T
learning how to use a file (no, really.)

Can turn a 45 colt like this

Into a 45 acp convertible that looks like this
