Be sure to read up on serial numbering and registration requirements for home built firearms.

Building your own gun is very rewarding, I've done an AR 15 and a 1911.

Ar, 1911, ruger mark 2 or 3, rem 700, ak. . All depending on your skill and ability. Can you weld? What size lathe? Mill?

btw how did your 1911 go in CA? did you get it into semi auto form somehow
Pretty much the same as any other SSE.

With a mill : 1911, ar15, ar10, possibly ruger mark 2 depending how good you are and rigid your setup is.

Welding can be useful in ak building but requires good amount of tooling and a solid press. Also weld up 1911 parts like beavertails, barrel hoods and than recut.

They already make mag tube attachments with rail for holding flashlights and stuff. Must make it durable due to the shock and recoil of the 12ga.

Ar15 are easy with a mill. You can use a jig or not. Just follow 80% rules and regulations for fed and california. 1911s are fun and more of a challenge to complete due to the fitting and tolerances.

Depending on how far down the AR rabbit hole you go, you will eventually want some sort of accessory (a specific height optic mount comes to mind, or perhaps a barrel mounted riser for an iron front sight) and it either doesn't exist or costs $170-$200 for some reason.

So start practicing making Picatinny rail type of stuff.
