So I guess I'm looking for a sale on a Rem 700 and then I'll eventually get a nicer stock and scope down the road. Thanks for all the input everyone.

Tikka uses plastic parts
If you have a little more to spend, look at the Browning Hells Canyon.
I have one in 300 wm, it's an awesome shooter.Comment

I saw some good deals at Dicks. Problem is their whole anti 2nd amendment stance. Well really it's anti AR stance. I think I'd rather pay more and support my local store, or wait for a better deal on a store that supports our rights a little better.Last edited by etwinam; 09-13-2018, 8:22 AM.God, Guns & Integrity. Well I'll admit I guess I got a little overzealous with options.
I am looking for a cheaper beater gun that I can take hunting. I don't want another bench gun I already have one and it's working great for me. I intend to set this rifle up for prone not bench anyways. I would however like some versatility and I would like to eventually have it be a respectable gun. The stock plastic that comes on the base model guns it's just too much Flex for me. I was thinking a decent upgrade would help the rifle a lot. I didn't think I needed to blueprint the action or anyting, just a stock and scope.
I didn't realize putting an HS Precision aftermarket stock on a lower end action was so frowned upon. I guess I considered a Savage 110 a little bit nicer than a rem 783.
It's not like I'm looking to bed manners stock with a base model action.
I just want something to start off with around 500 and be able to slowly upgraded into a decent rifle at the end. my beginning budgets about 500 bucks right now so I was thinking I could buy the action and then slowly put money and time into it. Am I mistaken on that idea?
This is why I come to Calguns, so I can learn without making expensive mistakes down the road or at least try to.
Looks like I'll be better off with the Remington 700 action and then I can slowly upgraded as I go. I was under the impression The Savage 110 or Ruger action would be similar but I guess I was wrong.
I'd probably get a Weatherby Vanguard or a Howa complete rifle. The stock isn't great on either of them, but the Vanguard is guaranteed 1 moa, so it's more than good enough for hunting. I think Howa has a similar guarantee, and the stock on it is a pillar bedded Hogue. You may end up deciding to just keep the stock.
Those may end up slightly over $500, depending on the deal you find. The new Savage 110's are probably a little steeper, but they are improved a lot this year.
BTW, I wouldn't worry about not having aftermarket support like the Remington fanbois. Check the HS Precision website - they make stocks for lots of different makes.Comment

Although I do not personally own one, I hear great things about the Ruger American.Comment

Okay, so it sounds like you got $500, and you want a hunting rifle. And then sometime in the future you want to put an HS Precision stock (you know they're over $400, right?) on it?

I could potentially do a Magpul stock but they're nowhere near the quality of HS precision. I love a McMillan A5 but those are even more expensive. So I decided to settle right in the middle on an HS precision, at least that's kind of how my logic got me there.
Sounds like I need a rem 700, Savage 110, Vanguard or similiar rifle. Then I can put a stock on it later and maybe a nicer trigger.God, Guns & Integrity. Prioritize your Priorities.Comment

Boyd's has a variety of stocks for them too. My brother and I both bought 308's and plan to ditch the plastic stocks for Boyds. The trigger pull is a little heavy but there's a spring mod that lightens it up yet is still impact safe.Originally posted by Sierra57Civil War 2.0 - If it comes to pass, the America-hating Leftists will have brought it upon themselves.
