I'd recommend the Ruger Predator. You get more for your money with that option. I have the Predator in 6.5CM. Very happy with the Predator for the money.

One option: if you want to get the setup just how you like the first time, try the .308 barreled Howa 1500 action for $260 after code M8Y.
God may have made men, but Samuel Colt made them equal.

Send me pics of your: Colt Detective Special, AMT Hardballer, pre-64 Winchester Model 70. I'm looking for them.

i did some searching on this subject, found a few people recommend a Tikka T3 Lite (or T3x Lite for their current model but likely a bit more)

I looked at Howa, my buddy has a 308 1500 that he loves. I haven't had the chance to shoot it yet though. I'm setting this gun up as a prone shooter so I like the idea of building it out. The only draw back is that I won't be able to shoot it until it's finished. Where a fully assembled gun will be shootable until I get a new stock bedded etc.

Also I think I'm leaning more towards 30-06. More range, more bullet weight options but a bit more recoil. I'm not afraid of recoil so the last part is really a non-issue. I still haven't decided, if a smoking deal on a 308 comes up for black Friday I'll jump on it for sure. But I prefer the 30-06 if given a choice unless someone can change my mind.

Tikka is another great option but out of my price range. Looked at bergara too... Even Mossberg, not sure about those working for me at that price though.

I think the Ruger is where I'm leaning in 30-06 but I know calgunners have alot of experience and I'm hoping they can convince me one way or another.

Remington 783 $275 for 30-06 no scope. Don't know if anyone makes a fiberglass stock for them, but the Boyds laminate stocks are nice. https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/...etic+Black+Stk

I have a 783 308 in Boyds classic laminate stock. They are much nicer rifles than the low price suggests.

Buddy has that exact same rifle. It's a hoot to shoot. He had some real problems with upgrades. Stock flexes horribly but it shoots well. Action needed to be smoothed a bit but it eventually broke in.

Currently he is trying to sell it and get a 700. That's partially why I'm not leaning Remmington. Unless I fall in to an amazing deal on a 700 already tuned of course. 5R would be nice too but not on my price range.

Yeah I don't like the plastic stocks. No flex in the Boyds classic laminate, Boyds also has the adjustable At-One stock that looks cool. My 308 783 action was slick from the get go.

So I just did a bit of research HS precision does not do a Ruger American stock. So that means I either need to buy a Savage or Remmington or look at other stock options.

Boyd's, mcmillians and MDT all make a RAR stock though. I'm gonna need to handle a few of their stocks. I've liked McMillan in the past. Not too much experience on the others though.

Of the ones you listed, I'd go with a Savage 110 for most aftermarket mods.

But you should be able to find the Rem 700 SPS Tactical 20" for $499 on sale at places like Sportsmans warehouse. Thats what I did when I got mine about 2 years ago. The 700 is great for customizing.

Spend $200 more and get the Remington 700 AAC-SD..
10 twist and already threaded for muzzle brake.

Those Howa action prices are hard to beat.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.

I would wait a few for either the Christmas sales to start or the PP sales to start popping up right before Xmas. Lots of good options in 30-06 hunting rifles late in the year after deer season and right before Xmas.

More of a hog and Whitetail hunting rifle and some range precision as well.
                            BLM watermelon smashing fun too.
I'm thinking HS precision for the stock.
First, you need to choose between a target rifle and a hunting rifle to decide what barrel contour you want.
There are no great heavy barreled hunting rifles or skinny barreled target rifles.

If you want an HS precision stock, start by looking at what receivers they make stocks for and work backwards.
All of the $500 class rifles come with a crappy injection molded stock that you will throw away if you want a higher quality (stiffer) stock.

You can occasionally get a Remington 700 Longrange in 30-06 that comes with an HS or B&C stock for $500, but that's an $800 class rifle marked down, not a $500 class rifle.
That's a heavy barreled target rifle.
