I think it is important to learn to do both supported and unsupported shooting. For me and my AR, unsupported is much more fun but when I get a bolt action rifle, I may like supported more.

You can guarantee that there will be report after it goes off?

I'd take that bet. I'm betting you can't even shoot a 6", 5 shot group at 1000 yards off a bipod AND REAR BAG (if you want to use one). Hell, I'm willing to bet you can't even consistently hit the 18" long red pig at 600 yards at Angeles off a bipod.

I can do it! I studied Shooter the movie and the series on Netflix enough to do it!

M&P 10 , what a nice platform for mid range precision

Okay to be fair, the fictional protagonist Bob Lee Swagger is an excellent offhand shooter. So you may be onto something.

This is going downhill quick. I honestly thought it was going to be a discussion on the merits of sling and hold versus rests/bipods. In doing both I find them equally challenging and rewarding.

bench shooting has its place and many serious marksman use skills at load development and rifle accuracy to shoot small varmints at long distances!

Personally I am more of an offhand shooter believing most hunting shots would be delivered with hasty sling and standing position.

That said I appreciate ALL gun culture shooters, whether, bench, trap, skeet, sporting clays, muzzle loader, etc ,etc etc .

                      Dif'rent strokes for different folks.

Most people don't only enjoy shooting from a bench rest at long range. We have different guns for different purposes, and also sometimes use the same guns for different purposes.

I enjoy shooting long range from a bench rest to test my rifles' and ammo's accuracy (taking my own shooting skill, or lack thereof, out of the equation), and also it's just fun to see how tight of a group you can possibly make. It's incredibly satisfying to ping steel from a really long range, and that just isn't that easy to do off-hand. For me, it would be basically impossible except for the occasional lucky shot. It's also a good way to zero a new optic without having to waste too much ammo. I can usually zero an optic in just 2 or 3 shots, because human error is not a factor. Simply shoot, measure, adjust, shoot again, and done.

But then I also like shooting offhand, or from a kneeling position (especially when practicing or doing deer hunting). I also like shooting at 50 or 100 yards sometimes, with a rest or without. And sometimes I even like shooting pistols and shotguns instead of rifles

A few people find one particular shooting sport they love, and do it almost exclusively, but the rest of us like to switch it up to keep things interesting. Even if long-range bench-rest shooting isn't your favorite shooting activity, I highly suggest you take the time to give it a try once in a while, it's probably more fun than you think.
Settle down, folks. The new "ghost gun" regulations probably don't do what you think they do.

When did we stop counting One Shot Groups?

Well, I suppose it doesn't matter in my case.
Even with One Shot Groups I still can't get anything under 3 inches.

Thank you. This is my deal for now. I want to get the new PA 3-18x50 soon and change out the handguard a bit later. It'll work for now

Thanks but I'm looking for something like the Predator - light, short threaded barrel, detachable magazine, short bolt lift. You'd think there are a lot of guns like that out there, but there aren't.

Years ago I had a Win M-70 in .308 with a Bausch&Lomb 4x12 variable. Very nice shooter that I wish I still had. The rifle was stock, and I used factory ammo.

It was a lot of fun to try to get the best groups out to 200 yards (the max for the range I shot at the time).

Not sure how good the current M-70's are today, but the older ones were deadly accurate. Might be worth considering for you.
