Everyone has their own preferences and what they enjoy. That's one of the great things about shooting, so much variety and options.NRA Benefactor Life Member

All depends what you are trying to do. If you are trying to make teeny tiny groups, which is my goal these days, then shooting from a bench off sandbags and stuff is the name of the game. I am not shooting the teeniest groups I want to yet. But I can pretty well guarantee that someone* shooting off a wobbly bipod with no additional sand bagging is not going to be getting even the groups I am getting with how I am shooting. How is it fun shooting from a bench with the rifle in a gun rest as opposed to shooting from a bipod or actually holding the rifle?
Isn't it kind of like a machine is doing all the work? Seems to me that gratification and bragging rights would be from the person actually holding the rifle and hitting a target hundreds of yards out imo.
*A lot of my question may seem dumb but im new to the shooting world*

Also, to be clear, adding some sandbags and a bench does not remove the person from the equation AT ALL. It just refines and makes more "micro" the things the person focuses on. Shooting accurately depends on doing things the exact same way every shot. Off the bench I am now focusing on things like "am I exerting the exact same pressure from my ring finger into the stock as the lasts one, is my cheek weld consistent, is my trigger finger placed the same, etc".
*Disclaimer: By "someone" I mean the average person at the range. I am quite sure there are people out there who CAN and WILL equal or beat my groups without bench or sandbags somehow, but they are the outliers. I am judging this only based on what I see at the range.Comment

You are new to the shooting world?
The best shooter of all time, whoever that was or may be (and it's probably not you), can not guarantee that level of precision at 1400 yards.
1/2" groups at 400 yards maybe, but guaranteeing that is still a stretch.Comment

I know man. It was a little morning humor i suppose. One day ill be decent. I admire the skill all of you guys have thoughSent from my SM-G965U using TapatalkComment

I don't have that skill, my offhand shooting blows.
But check out the links below for an example of what the top shooters are capable of shooting unsupported (no bench, no bipod, but they are permitted to use a sling in all positions other than standing offhand).
Service rifle division used to be iron sights only, but beginning about 2 years ago shooters may use magnified optics of 4.5X power or less.Comment

LOL. If you think the machine is doing all the work, why not try it and see. You'll quickly find that BR shooting is not easy and not just about the equipment. If it was, those with more money invested would always win. It's about making consistent ammo and shooting consistently with the given conditions. How is it fun shooting from a bench with the rifle in a gun rest as opposed to shooting from a bipod or actually holding the rifle?

OP back to your original question.
Rests/bags and benches are used, because even the most steady human cannot keep that perfectly still and motionless.
If you have access to a cat toy lazer or something like that point it at the ceiling corner of a room and see how steady you can hold it. You will be amazed how unsteady you are at 10-15..not take that out to even 50 yards and imagine the bullet riding that lazer line. Please get back to us.May I always be the type of person my dog thinks I amComment
