    DROS Delayed first time buyer.

So I see a firearm I wanted to buy online, it was CA approved gun and all that. Decided to have it delivered to one of their "Approved FFL's", I pay for it and get a call from them telling me to come down and to do paper work and that they have the handgun.

On the same day I go do the FSC first, and right afterwords I go to the gun store to do the paperwork. I pay their fee, the tax, and dros. Then 8 days into the 10th day I get a call from them saying that my DROS has been delayed, and that I have 30 days, and that I will probably receive a letter.

Now I know it's not my name, I have a unique name, however I even put down my SS#, which I later found out was a waste of time, but did it anyways. I don't have child support because I have no children, I have never been fingerprinted and handcuffed in my life. Both my DL and Registration are up to date. They said to do a live scan, but wouldn't that be a waste of another $50 since they only check for when and if you were finger printed right?

I guess I have no choice now. I asked the FFL if they release to undetermined and they said no, that they will need a live scan, and a letter from DOJ stating that I'm eligible to purchase it. Worse comes to worse I end up getting it refunded and losing out the restocking fee and just saving money to move out of this state. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Also another question, shouldn't they have done the background check? Isn't that what I paid for? I don't get why the FFL suggested for me to do a live scan, aren't their tools at DOJ sufficient for that?

They did do the background check. Or rather, they did submit the information (during the DROS process) for CADOJ to do the background check. And DOJ is the one coming back and saying "undetermined." Don't blame the shop for the DOJ's mess.

I'm not blaming the shop. I was just asking why they would suggest a live scan. It's still in delay, but I get that it will flip to undetermined if DOJ doesn't come back within 30 days with a decision. My question was, why would I need to do a live scan? Does it make the job at DOJ go faster? Was it because my thumb print during the dros was bad and they needed something better? From what I remember the thumbprint was really smudged, don't know if that would delay or not. Or is the live scan just for me, to figure out what's wrong.

Could be that the DOJ is backlogged.

I’m fortunate enough to have an FFL who knows me and would release to me undetermined.

Ding do a live scan until you get a denial.. delayed means nothing except they need more time to determine your eligibility.. could be as simple as a typo in the dros.. check your paperwork and make sure all the data looks correct.. if so just wait

Thanks for all the replies. Yes, my mistake with this FFL, I will go a different route next time, but I really wanted this firearm and worse comes to worse I will have to give it up. I'll just wait and see. Out of curiosity I went to the main LA COUNTY website and for a small fee I checked for Felony, Misdemeanor, Family Law, Civil and Probate, and nothing came up, went to DMV for records, clean. I even went on the Pacers website and registered to see if there was anything as far as court records go, nothing.

Any typos on the DROS paperwork?

                  Who was the FFL?

I have the DROS, there doesn't seem to be any mistakes or typos but I will look again. I'll let you guys know who the FFL when this is all over with, don't want to give that away yet.

I got delayed once, it was released a couple days later. It happens sometimes, but that sure sucks being your first gun.

Not turners, but they are listed as a vendor on here.

A few years back an illegal immigrant used my wife’s SS # with his employer... caused all types of IRS issues for her. Said we owed another 35k taxes - took years to sort out. Hopefully something like that didn’t happen to you, it’s a good idea to check like you did.

This. The delay letter you will receive will not give you the reason for your particular delay, but it will give you some general possible reasons. If you end up with a denial, DOJ will send you a letter that does show the reason for the denial. If you get approved, you won't get any letter.

Doing the live scan doesn't speed up the process at DOJ, it is simply a request for your criminal history on file. You do the live scan, they mail you a copy, and it will likely take more time to complete than waiting out the 30 days.

Wait, see what the outcome is. If you are approved, great. If you go undetermined or get denied, do the live scan and try to figure out what's on your record that would cause it, then try to correct it.

If you get approved and just want to see what may have caused the delay, do the live scan and try to figure it out.
