What is the best way to cut pelican pick n pluck foam?

Just bought a Springfield Armory 1911 TRP full rail and ordered a pelican 1170 case. Instead of just pulling the squares out, I’d rather outline the gun and cut out the foam in the exact shape of the handgun for an exact fit but I’m not sure what would be the best way to cut the foam.

Serrated butter knife works pretty well, helps keep from over cutting and leaves the edges pretty clean.

Otherwise your only real option for a perfect fit is to use a hot wire knife, and probably solid foam not pick n pluck.
The actual value of above $.02 is less than $.01 after taxes.

I use electric serrated turkey carving knife

For pistols I took pictures from up high centered over the gun, then scaled the image to size and printed them out, cut out, and traced onto the foam and carved it out for a perfect fit.

His answer was spot on. You outline and cut and it'll still turn out like junk. Hot wire will do a better job but it's still not solid foam. But new solid foam and do it right or just go to the Pelican distributor in Gardena and get new foam and/or have them cut it for you.

I bought a sheet of closed cell foam and a long-tip marker and cut my own. For about $20 you get enough to do about ten cases.

Pretty uncalled for don't you think? I thought he gave a helpful answer.
Buy made in USA whenever possible.

                Agree.

That's one of the better answers when somebody openly asks for help on this forum.

Is this a Pelican pick n' pluck pistol pack? Pretty phenomenal.

Don't the Springfields come with their own foam suitcase? My Loaded did. It fit perfectly. Maybe use that and cut a square out of the Pelican and insert that into the Pelican?

Hope you get it sorted out.

I don't bother to pick out the foam or cut the outline in my Pelican cases. Just put the firearm in and close. Always felt it provided more protection and stability inside the case once close and I've never had an issue. Also allows me to use the case for any firearm I own that will fit, or several at once so I can transport them in one case.

                      YMMV.

My TRP came with a very nice quality hard case with cut out closed cell. Hell The TRP came with a better case than my SA Pro.

You bought a great gun with a good case, i have one. Also own a pelican and i went the route suggested. Bought new foam and made an outline SLIGHTLY smaller than the gun and used a new razor. Worked perfect. I do have the hotwire but i didnt want to set up the table. It holds my LRB M25, a TRP and an old P2000 that i need to change to my Nighthawk.
