A LOT of people shoot in the canyons behind Calico Ghost Mine as well, some really great 4x4 trails too. I'm not at all sure of the legality, but I see a lot of shooters and the rangers don't seem to bother them. I've never went shooting there but I take the Jeep up ther from time to time and there's some really challenging stuff if you want to test your off-roading chops.
Hodge Rd. on a weekend can be really hairy IMO. Way too many beer drinking magazine dumpers.
