38 special, all steel revolver. Shoot 148gr wadcutters. They are the lowest recoiling 38's commercially loaded. Ruger is probably your best bet if buying new. There are a couple of 2nd tier revolvers that are cheaper, but not as good. A full size 22 would probably be better.

Just remember when looking at trainers with military / LEO service credentials... ask if were they "trainers" in the military or in their agency. Just because someone can "do" something, doesnt mean that can teach it well. Hell most cops cant shoot worth a damn.

The NRA certifications, while needed to get NRA insurance for a training operation mean NOTHING in terms of someone being a competent instructor and qualified to offer instruction for $$$

Go train with Scott Reitz. He was the lead instructor for LAPD Metro SWAT. Uncle Scotty's got a badass range facility and a variety of courses, including a women's only handgun class for your wife.

Look no further than ITTS. He's more expensive than most but you get what you pay for.

                Being north of
70 has definite advantages: I was able to do all my stupid stuff before video cameras, smartphones, utube, and the internet.

For a newer shooter I would highly recommend Artemis Defense Institute in Lake Forest. They have simulators with “real” Glock pistols (real glocks retrofitted with lasers and compressed air to simulate recoil). I train there from time to time and it’s fantastic to be able to practice gun handling in a 100% safe environment. The system tracks your shots in real time—think aid the old Duck Hunt video game, but way cooler! You get instant feedback and you get to see how changing your technique can have different effects. They offer a few classes specifically designed for new pistol shooters, too. I really enjoy using their facility.

This. Also, take lessons from a trainer who has access to various firearms for your wife to shoot. That may come down to where the trainer gives lessons as many ranges rent.

As for racking a slide, there are techniques that a decent trainer can teach your wife, but if she still has trouble she may wish to opt out for a revolver as other posters suggest.

Btw, unless she absolutely tiny this is most likely bad training / lack of education than any real issue.

We have a lady instructor who might be 90lbs soaking wet, rack the slide no issue (firm shooting hand, weak hand over top rack the slide and slap the shoulder, many new shooters really are reluctant to put force into it because they are scared, have her train without a mag in AFTER you get her instruction) and recoil is even less of an issue (100% wrong grip if she is shooting a g19 with factory ammo and having recoil issue, many people are scared and simply "dont wanna" and give up)

Females really respond to female trainers many times, I would get her a one on one with the tiniest (removes mental blocks, gets people in the "if she can do it so can I") most competent female trainer you can find. Without you present (people can feel embarrassed when a SO is nearby and they cant do stuff)
