Optomestrist for shooting glasses

My optometrist is a shooter too, only long guns. He did the exam and fitted me with progressive lenses... wrong choice. I couldn't make him understand that I still had to tilt my head way back to be able to pick up the front site.

I'm trying "stick on bi-focals" now on an old pair of glasses I use to drive (dominant eye only). I'm trying 2.50 diopter. Static holds them on so there is no adhesive residue.

That's one of the challenges in getting the shooting script right for you even though the eye doc is a shooter. BTDT

I brought the a copy of the hyperfocal distance formula, the sight radius of the rifle (I shoot irons), and previous copies of my eye exams to my appointment. I told him that I am near sighted with astigmatism and the presboypia seems to be going up in power.

He gave me my daily eyewear script as well as my shooting script and suggested that I use an iris for depth of field. It works but it gets tougher as presbyopia goes up since its that balance between near vision and distance and how that affects sight alignment.

I took my gun into my optometrists (with pre-approval), and he measured my eyes with a focal point at my front sight. I then used that prescrption to have lenses made that fit in the optical insert for my Rudy Project shooting glasses (it clips in on the nose bridge so that I can still use the various tinted lens that I have for my glasses).

Worked really well for me.

A rule of thumb is that a prescription that is one half of your reading prescription will be good to see the pistol front sight. My prescription was 1.75 and I got a lens of 1.0 diopter because that is as low as they go. My optometrist had no experience with shooting glasses so I had to do research and tell them what to order.

But it's pretty much what I "invented" for myself using the stick ons. Wish I'd seen THESE before I spent the $200 for the prescription from my OD.

What is an "iris"... (other than the two I have in my head at the moment)?

I am fortunate that my natural focus is laser sharp on my front sight in my left eye. Although I'm right eye dominant, I always shoot using my left. I used to do the geezer 'looking over my glasses' thing when shooting, but figured that sorta defeats the purpose of having eye-pro. I bought ESS Crossbow and shoot uncorrected.

My wife on the other hand, has a pretty severe correction. She also uses the ESS Crossbow, but has the Rx insert. She brought her pistol in to have the optometrist dial in her focus on the front sight. It's good, but the RX is getting a little old. She could use another pair soon. The eye doctor is Dr. Nah at 20/20 in San Ramon. He also has an office in San Mateo.

That other shooting glasses with the bifocal right up near the nose pads on the inside looks very intriguing! Going to so some more research on that!!!
