I shot my 12 gauge with 3 1/2 magnum slugs after my 9mm CX4 in a indoor range (not my brightest moment). Its was a absolutely horrible but funny idea, and i was wearing hearing protection. The concussion alone vs the 9mm was enough to for me to loudly yell "HOLY $H!T" lol

My comment was genuine, from the initial post there was no information about how you were shooting. As I said most if not all Hunters don't use hearing protection. You want to get all pissy about being a badass that's your problem not mine. That's not where I was headed. No ****ing Wonder California is losing gun rights. SMH

Strange that it had that effect on you. I don't know a single Hunter that uses hearing protection, perhaps it happened because it took you off guard, I don't know.

I was just thinking the same... or plenty of people now or who have been in the military shooting comparable cartridges since at least 1903.

I double up at the range; nothing wrong with protecting your hearing, but wearing hearing protection during military action is not typcially possible, and often wearing hearing protection while hunting can not only be stupid; but dangerous.

i have no idea how those WW2 soldiers weren't deaf by the time they came home.

Which is why I think so many men of the "greatest generation" were all deaf by the time they were in their 50s. At least it seemed that way when we were growing up. EVERY WWII vet I ever knew personally, wore hearing aids early on.

August 1967 fort ord ca rifle range. Man on the left ,man on the right every six feet with a M14. this went on for almost a week preparing to qualify .No stinking ear protection.
Yes my hearing is bad , constant ringing.

Using earplugs under the muffs keeps that from ever happening. I take the earplugs out after I am in the car going home.

My ears constantly ring from childhood, my Father started in WWII artillery
and was deaf as a post because of it, so no earpro in my childhood.

If the rifle had a brake on it I could see that happening without ear protection. Fired my 22-250 once without ear protection and it is braked. Ringing lasted for a day. Never will do that again. Pretty much hate brakes now.

I've often wondered if adrenaline plays a roll in protecting the inner ear during times of excitement. When hunting, it almost seems like my ears shut down some when the shot is fired. No pain, no sensation of a loud noise. Almost muffled-like.

I've learned the hard way a few times about forgetting my earpro. Rifles are loud, and even worse when they have muzzle breaks. Hunting out in the environment vs shooting on an enclosed range with plenty of hard objects for the sound to bounce off of are two completely different things.

Probably the brake that was on it. Most hunting rifles direct the blast AWAY from the shooter...

This. My AR's aren't that loud or have much concussion, but I've seen some people with the most obnoxious breaks and it drives me nuts. It's a 22 caliber rifle... Why you need something that loud I'll never understand.

On a .308, muzzle breaks are brutal. Thanks for the reminder OP and ignore the asshat tough guys who enjoy the sound of ringing in their ears.

Electronic muffs for me even while hunting - bionic ears are awesome! Also, lucky enough to have a suppressor which dramatically reduced noise even for supersonic loads.

Heck, I wear muffs when driving tractors, mower, chainsaw, etc. Why damage ones ears?

Granted, wear proper hearing protection and eye protection and be carful with all that you do. Roger that. So here is my .02 cents worth...

Getting your ears blasted by the report of a single 7.62x51mm cartridge is one thing, but didn't the OP ever play football or box or get in a school yard fight and take a punch to the nose?
