Once that happened when I was in a rifle class. My buttstock must have pushed up my ear protection just a tad that the gel padding seal was broken. It was good the SCAR17 guy was on my left and to my right was a 5.56 AR. But it was a painful experience. Now I double up when shooting rifles.

Strange that it had that effect on you. I don't know a single Hunter that uses hearing protection, perhaps it happened because it took you off guard, I don't know.

check your eyes and ears before you pull the trigger.
Duly noted. Never hurts to hear reminders. Hope you are recovered quickly.

I take my ear pro for granted. Like the time at Angeles years ago when so-and-so brought his .50 BMG Barret bolt action... while my ears never hurt per se, (was wearing my beefy Howards) every time he touched off a round it *was* like a bomb went off.

As an aside, he claimed $8 materials cost for each .50 BMG round he handloaded. Again, this was maybe 6 or 7 years ago... when I was in LAX Ammo's Inglewood location last week I saw a box of 20 for what seemed iirc between $3 - $4 per round. Granted, they may not contain the quality bullet, powder or primers he might have been using, but it's interesting to see that one could shoot it for less these days. If it were legal to acquire one now! Not sure what the scene is, there...

Thanks again for your Public Service Announcement.

This. I take game with my 7mm rem mag every year with no ear protection. So do all my hunting friends...

You seem to have had a similar experience to that of that liberal media guy that was devastated by shooting an ar15.

I shoot many calibers without hearing protection while hunting and never a flinch, problem but I started shooting at 6 years old when ear plugs and muffs were basically only uswd in factories.

Probably the brake that was on it. Most hunting rifles direct the blast AWAY from the shooter...

To the OP. Was the area you were shooting in/from enclosed at all?

Some of the ranges I've used have the shooters separated by stone walls, and that makes the firearm you're using sound a whole lot louder (Duh), whereas a hunter is standing out in the open with little to direct the sound back at themselves.

                  Just a thought.

I already have significant tinnitus, so I always double up on my hearing protection.

I hunt and have done so since the early 1960s and never use ear protection. The noise it not bad.
I also shoot at the range and there if I forget to put on my ear protection it is really bad. Same rifles.

One of the reasons is when hunting you are concentrating on the animal and when target shooting not. Even though you may concentrate on the target it is different. That is also one reason when hunting you do not feel the recoil yet you do at the bench.

All the shooting I have done without ear protection, And in the workplace, has caused bad tinnitus and I will tell you it is no fun. I did find something that helped it but I suggest not getting it to start with.

probably more the surprise unless you were in a semi-enclosed area. I shoot my 308 at Coyotes with no hearing protection.

Glad you're OK and it wasn't an explosion of the barrel.

Thankfully Calguns is full of tough, brave men who can teach us all lessors in manliness. Truly amazing men here. With the level of manliness here, how do the Democrats stand a chance?

Hey at least you weren't next to an owner of a M82A1 like me. I warn everyone around me to make sure eyes and double up on ears if they can. Last year at Clark County range a guy 2 lanes to my right forgot his ears and screamed bloody murder. Made things worse with the concussive force from the tank brake too.
