Those useful thoughts, I believe, are the ones that not only birthed this Nation, but will be the ones that could guarantee it.

Good article. I like the way you thought out the arguments and explained the part about needed "for what."

I think I will use that next time I go down that path of debate.

            "you don't need an AR-15"

"what do you mean? I don't need an AR15 for what? self defense? exercising my 2nd amendment right, overthrowing a tyrannical government?
If I don't need an AR15 for those, then you don't need a smartphone"

Then I am sure they will bristle at that statement and the debate will continue with your article's arguments.

            Also what TroopThrowback said:
What’s more, the technological distance from the quill and sheaf to the smart phone is a leap far greater than that of the musket to the AR-15.
The AR15 to the musket is like the typewriter to the printing press.
The Iphone to whatever the 1780s 1st amendment equivalent is like a space age laser instant death ray.

The leap in technology for phones is incredible. We have more computing power in a phone than the computers we used to put people on the moon.
Emotional appeal is a marketing tactic and not a foundation for effective argument.

Acording to Wally Shirra, when he was in space they had less computing power than a 1990's Casio wrist watch. (sorry for the thread drift)

That's right. Don't let them pat you on the head with, "we'll let you have them for hunting and target practice." We don't need them for that.

As an aside, if you need to head down that path of what we really need, you can point out that to survive humans need (1) water, (2) food, (3) clothing, and (4) shelter, in that order of priority. Not too far from these four, a weapon is needed to ensure survival through self-protection (and in some instances, for gathering and securing food stores). Which is to reaffirm that a weapon is part of our basic human need and drive for survival. Modernity may have given us the impression that we no longer need such anachronisms, but we are only one natural disaster or one man-made upheaval away from returning to the fragility of raw subsitence. It is hard to make urbanites, in particular, imagine this, but perhaps reminders of Katrina and other major natural disasters (earthquake overdue here in California) will get the point across.

I made this point to leftist "acquaintance" on Google+, and he replied with "your logic doesn't hold." I asked him to explain why, and he let me know he now had me tagged in his RWNJ category. And leftist-progressives everywhere said, "Q.E.D., Amen."
