    Home defense round check...

Forgot to switch ammo before heading to the range this morning and spent 4 mags/38 rounds of home defense on paper targets.
At least I know they kick the same as my range reloads. I never realized the mistake until I went to reload the cleaned gun.
Ok, fess up- How many of you have done that?

    Welcome to calguns.

I function test 25 rounds of the more expensive hollerpoint Federal HST in my home defense .45 auto roughly once per season; once every three months. This way, I know the remaining 25 rounds is good to go, and the second 50-round box of that lot number is too.

This way my HD cartridge stock is consistently, albeit slowly, replenished.

I do the same with the other firearms that may find their way into the house from time to time: a 16" .357 lever carbine and an 18" 12 ga pump.

Not home defense rounds per say but I have shot Barnes copper hunting rounds by mistake at paper targets.

Even after swapping magazines, you didn't notice? Hmmm.

          Ive done that before.
Let a complete stranger at the range shoot a whole mag of golden sabre .40's.
He was like wow this gun has a lot of kick!
Thought he was crazy until I couldn't find my carry mag

I've done it, once. Since then I mark the lead free hunting ammo so I can't mistake it.

I brought some to the range yesterday in the same box as my plinking ammo but put a strip of blue tape over it.

I burn through my HD ammo every 6 months just to keep fresh stuff in the magazine and to stay familiar with the recoil and report of the good stuff.

I shoot mine yearly so if I do by mistake it's not the end of the world.

That's good practice. I'm tempted to do the same, but once I went to order new rounds and realized that California is going to make that a big, more expensive pain in the butt now, I let it slip my mind.

If you do that, you should not be allowed to own firearms!

                      JK!!! I've done it too.

I had a little hick-up last week at the range. I forgot to bring my "rapid fire" card and it was on a rare a day when wanted to rapid fire some handguns to see how they performed.

Now I have to go back and do it all over again. Poor me.

It's always a good idea to cycle through your carry ammo/home defense stuff.

I do it regularly on purpose. Once a year minimum. Most of the time twice a year.
