High Capacity Magazine Question

Most commercial 10 round mags don't work too well in the .30 carbines. Do the above if you want a nice functioning legal setup.
The ten and 15 round mags I have are different sizes, a knowledgeable individual could tell the difference looking closely, the average individual wouldn't know the difference.
Mil surp .30 carbine mags have value if they are unmolested or blocked in a reversible manner (which probably means they aren't legally blocked). Peeps in free states pay good money every day to acquire them. You just can't offer them for sale legally in California.
Thus, without actually confiscating your dads assets, the state has taken away any $ value they have, since he cannot sell them, nor gift them to his own son. Legally-speaking, of course.NRA Life Member CRPA Life Member

Assuming your dad is still alive, why not have dad put some blocks in the mags so they only fit 10 rounds and then give them to you? You'll have received 10 round mags; just don't remove the blocks.Calguns.net, where everyone responding to your post is a Navy Force Delta Recon 6 Sniperator.Comment

Let's be clear here. The situation that the OP describes is a no-go.
It's extremely counterproductive to talk about "finding" or things that "might have happened," but didn't. It doesn't change the legality of the situation at hand. If the OP keeps the magazines he would be doing something illegal. No if-s or but-s. As such, nobody on these forums will condone or advise that he should do it.
With that out of the way (and clear understanding that there are no legal options), the question is what happens if the OP chooses to keep the magazines. In general, when it comes to magazines, a DA would have to prove (1) that the magazines are not possessed legally, which means the DA has to establish the date of transfer, and (2) the transfer must have been within the statute of limitations. Both of these are hard to prove unless the person in question publicly stated that they have recently received such magazines.
Regardless of legality, high capacity magazines can be confiscated (even if charges cannot be filed) under "nuisance statutes."sigpicNRA Benefactor MemberComment

I don't have a problem complying with the law, my dad and I had no idea what the law was. Like I mentioned previously, I purchased California compliant magazines already because it's honestly not worth the headache. It would have been nice however, if I could legally hold on to them. Oh well!Comment

Knock knock knock....hi, I'm from the CA DOJ....I hear you recently acquired some high capacity magazines. May I see them?Originally posted by JeffMThe road to hell is paved with good intentions.

As other noted, legally it's a felony for your dad to give you the large capacity magazines and a felony for you to receive them.My dad recently gave me his M1 carbine last weekend but I have some concerns/questions.
First off, he has a few what appear to be 15 and 30 round magazines. I'm I allowed to keep those since they're obviously from an old gun if it was gifted to me correct?
Secondly, if possession of them is not an issue, can I buy parts for them, such as springs for the magazines, since they're probably worn out?
Finally, would I be able to take those magazines out to the range without getting in trouble?
Please pardon my ignorance but I want to make sure I'm covered. The laws are very confusing.
However, your dad can legally permanently modify the magazines into 10 round magazines and then legally give them to you.
He can permanently modify them by installing M1 Carbine magblocks and epoxying the floorplate closed.sigpic
