Not 1988. Began 1967 with the Mulford act. Governor Ronald Reagan signed it.
It has been a logical domino effect from there. -
Something=anything.
That is all.Comment

Come on now, they just want to compromise, you know:
They get registration of AW's and we get nothing.
They get standard capacity magazines outlawed, we get nothing.
They get bullet buttons reclassified as AW, and we get nothing.
They get forced registration of 80% lowers and we get nothing.
They get a safe gun roster, and we get nothing.
Yep, all they really want is a simple compromise."I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain..."

How about this:
All US schools must have keypass doors
All schools must have a surrounding/limiting fenceline
All schools must have ballistic/round-resistant doors
All teachers must have the ability (not compulsory) to CCW if they desire and are willing to go through real, NRA-approved/vetted training.
All schools must have armed security with video camera monitoring
All schools must have operating PA systems that allow admin/security to be perfectly clear why the school is being locked down and where the threat(s) is(are).
FBI holds accountable those who dropped the ball in florida related to the missed tips
Sheriff's dept fires Isreal, provided retraining for all deputies and hires new pro-active sheriff's.Comment

I already answered this in your other thread... Gun free zones = easy targets
Furthermore, decades ago our government deicided it was wrong to lock up crazy people until after they prove they are a danger to themselves or others. We are now dealing with those consequences."To preserve liberty, it is essential that the whole body of the people always possess arms, and be taught alike, especially when young, how to use them" - Richard Henry Lee

All that could be done to every school in the country. Doesn't stop a nut job from showing up at dismissal time, or making a bomb or ied.How about this:

The problem is, "something" is not going to improve safety on campus and public streets, because "something" only applies to law abiding citizens, who are not the problem.
"Something" is completely ignored by criminals and mentally ill, and will continue to be the case.
We don't take away your car because your neighbor got drunk and killed someone, we take away his car and his freedom.
If he gets drunk and gets caught before he kills someone, we take away his license (and he continues to drive anyway)
And driving is not an enumerated right.- Rich

Exactly. Explosives are illegal too. We live in a world where bad people do bad things. Removing free citizens' rights to defend themselves is not the solution to the problem.Comment

Those defensive, pro-active measures, which once in place would harden these targets, are probably a pipe dream, but one I can only hope they get some traction.
Aside from that...I forsee a conversation, nationally, about magazine size.
How about capping mags at 20rds, they'll say...
Regardless of what people say around here, I for one am a pragmatist. 20 is better than 10, 30 is better than 20. The reason everyone loathes the mag laws is because it neuters our rigs. What they'll say is that the same effect might have made this latest attack less lethal. I know I for one, feel less lethal with a 10RD XD mag than I would with a 13-14 round mag. "Might have" being the operable phrase here, and even Marco Rubio said it himself last week.
Pundits will talk about this question: Is a 10-20 rd mag fed bolt action more "effective" than an internal box fed?
And if we're honest, we know that of course it is, You remove the step of having to press 5 more rounds in. Instead you can just keep firing, you don't have to fiddle with the mag at all for another 5-15 shots. Could that handicap save lives? Of course. Just like soldiers waiting till a machine gun is reloading to move in a combat environment, reloading has shown to be a pivotal point in a handful of these incidences.
Are we giving up rights with this measure? I know the bulk of calguns will say yes, but I predict that this will be the functional path that politicians take because they can say:
A. we're not taking any guns away
B. The next time there is a shooting the gun-man's ability will be depleted by 1/3, due to new mag regulations
C. Sportsmen and patriots alike will still be able to train, prepare and respond, aside from the reduced tactical ability they'll experience.
I know that this is a no-go for a lot of people around here, but a lot of people around here are not in power. This, simply put, is what I see the conversation devolving into, since those on the left need something/someone to blame in a situation that they can't control. Despite the actionable suggestions made by both sides in this case, I see this sophomoric discussion by these tide-pod eating kids keeping us there for the time being, like it or not, and might eventually seem like the lessor of two evils after a protracted battle.Last edited by MissiontoMars; 02-25-2018, 10:38 PM.Comment
