Success!!
After contacting more than 20 eBay sellers of old Mossberg parts, one got back to me with a link to an auction on eBay that I missed. I placed my bid, raised it, but got outbid. I thought there were 9 days left and as it turned out, it was ending today and I missed an opportunity to raise my bid. I was bummed.
However, the seller got in touch with me as he had a second one available. We completed the transaction through eBay and I now have my hood on the way. It cost me over 100 dollars (the other buyer paid over 100 as well) but to me it's worth it to have my father's rifle complete. I was pretty darn surprised that there was actually one available and shocked to find out the seller had two. For those with the make it yourself suggestions, I'd thought of that. And I have the skill and tools to do most of the work, but the original is made of a really stiff piece of steel, perhaps spring steel. Probably stamped, then formed, then blued. If I really couldn't find one (and it was beginning to look that way) I was going to perhaps give it a go making a new one. Now I won't have to and I can spend my time on other projects. And the money I spent on the used one is still cheaper than doing it all myself, so I'm happy.
