I would first detail strip it, make sure nothing worse is going on inside, oil it and wipe with oiled rag until all evidence of rust is gone. Basically buy yourself time to decide if you want to refinish.

If the gun checks out otherwise (everything still in Python spec) I would actually spend the extra money to refinish it and bring the glory back out.

If refinishing, I would say go with original finish option.

Don't do anything but reblue, np3 would be blasphemous. Might as well do it since you got a decent deal on it.

If I were you I'd have it reblued by Fords... years ago I spent $700 dollars to have two revolvers sent to Colt for reblue and they were very poorly done, you could probably dig up an old thread about it.

If you really want it restored, contact this company.

Otherwise, just clean it and shoot it.

I could not believe NP3 as a choice.

If it was made in 1967, keep your eyes open for a set of Python Gen ll walnut grips.
The Pachmayr grip it is currently wearing were not Colt factory issued.
Gen ll grips will expose the nicely fluted backstrap.

I think I have seen those grips run $400 and up. I don't know if you would want to add those to a shooter and run the risk of damaging the grips. Just my personal opinion.

You will never get a finish to duplicate an original Colt finish. Whatever
you put on it for a finish is going to be a lot of time and money.

Colt reblue cost as much as np3, but I hear colt is hit or miss, because colt may not remove all the rust etc. Robar will clean and sand blast before coating.

With the reblue, you’re only going to realistically increase the value by what the reblue cost you....it will never go to near-collector values. Especially if you’re going to keep shooting it anyway.....

Although, with an NP3 finish, you’d probably lose the entire cost of the refinish when you try to sell it. No one is going to pay you back for that.
