I'm sure that'll be news to the ATF.
As I just alluded to, being 'paranoid enough' these days is open for debate.
Being unnecessarily frightened by or 'xenophobic' regarding new members with, perhaps, unusual questions is ... ???
But, to each their own.Comment

That's good to know. I will pass that one along.
Thanks.Comment

Medi-cal doesn't track his purchases.
A little off topic, but the fishy smell is probably from: No job, no family help, no. Gov help... where does he find money to survive?Last edited by superdave50; 01-24-2018, 7:38 AM.Comment

The ATF is doing stings on people who receive state benefits and buy firearms? Oh yeah, the ATF has nothing better to do than catch diabetic medi cal recipients buying guns. So they can charge them with what exactly?
In CA these days I guess I'm not surprised that someone would be worried about almost anything concerning guns. I think the assumption here is that the state and/or feds are watching absolutely everything we do. They're not. They can't even keep track of hardened criminals. Prohibiting factors are felonies, domestic violence misdemeanors, mental incompetency and the use of illegal drugs (federal law). Diabetes, welfare, parking tickets and purchases of certain goods are not.
So it's reasonable to assume that someone buying something (anything) reasonable won't get in trouble with their benefits. If your relative starts buying entire gun collections or luxury cars with cash, there may be a problem. Though I imagine the gov would have a hard time tracking even those types of purchases.Comment

Type 2 Diabetics don't take insulin. That is for Type 1 Diabetics. But, from what I understand, even the Type 2 prescriptions aren't cheap.
Evidently, there was something about owning over $1,000 worth of 'non-essential' (?) assets or anything worth over $1,000 in the application. He didn't remember specifically when I asked if it was in aggregate or an individual item.
There's also all the rumors and stories about doctors, gun questions, and potential 'back door' databases.
You can take it seriously or not. You don't have, nor will you get, ALL the possible information and it's clear you aren't familiar enough with the system to proffer the advice being asked for.
As I've said twice now, being 'paranoid enough' is open for debate individually. I can't blame him when it comes to whether it might be a 'risk' to his health insurance eligibility. As I've said, I've been lurking on this site for nearly a decade.
So, how many threads would you like me to point to regarding HOW the State might enforce gun control and/or gun control prohibitions via things like taxes, tax returns, social program access, etc.? Put another way, I'm simply asking a legitimate question based, at least in part, on the very discussions/posits put forth on this board.Comment

He has a couple of part-time jobs or, what I would call, a couple of part-time/part-time jobs for minimum wage. I've seen A LOT of people being 'trapped' by such jobs since 2008/2010; i.e., since the crash and Obamacare. They're the type of jobs where you might work a couple days a week if you're fortunate. Neither offers insurance.
There's a reason why family has offered to help. I'm not sure what he does for living arrangements; i.e., rent. He may have moved in with his Father. I know he doesn't have anything to do with his Mother.
Food? I don't know beyond what I've already said; i.e., that he fishes for food, not sport. I suspect he still deer hunts; but, in the past, I know he used one of his Father's or Grandfather's rifles.
The bottom line is, I wasn't going to press. I remember being that age and how I reacted to a lot of questions about my lifestyle. As I said, I also remember not having much money and being a little 'defensive' about going home to macaroni & cheese or canned chili, et al. when my friends asked if I wanted to go to the local drive-in. So...Comment

Why doesn't he just get ObamaCare (CoveredCA)?
Type 2 diabetics commonly take insulin along with other oral drugs. I have no idea how much his disease has progressed but most type 2 eventually end up taking insulin. I was using the term "insulin" as a catch all for "medication" but I think you knew that.
You mentioned a $100 shotgun, so that leaves him another $900 in assets right? Let's be realistic, it's not as if someone's really going to come to his house and count the value of his stuff. Assets means verifiable stuff like cars and real estate, 401K, bank accounts. It doesn't mean they're going to send out someone to appraise his bicycle and backpack.Buy made in USA whenever possible.Comment

I wasn't going to respond to this one. But, I guess it's an 'educational moment.'
Type 2 Diabetes has a number of causes. Lifestyle can play into it. So do genetics; i.e., mother to son, ethnicity, etc. In his case, my guess would be that of a layman and a limited awareness of his situation growing up.
Suicidal? I'll let that go. It's early in the morning.
Who would buy a single shot 12 gauge? Too many people to list. Let's just say that, in his case, it probably has to do with what he can afford.Comment
