    Walmart ammo, post-January 2018

Was in the Simi Valley Walmart today (buying some ammo of course) and had a quick chat with the guy behind the sporting goods counter. For those who have been in there before you'll know him as the guy who has been there for years and can calculate your total including the sales tax down to the penny, in his head, before he even starts ringing you up.

In any case, I asked what the plan was going to be in January and he replied that he has already jumped through the requisite hoops to continue to sell ammunition and all one needs to do is cough up their driver's license and you're good to go. In fact he asked for my license with today's purchase which was something new to me at least. This I assume is the way it will be until the background check system comes online etc. etc. etc.

So, according to the guy at the counter, the Simi Walmart will be pretty much business as usual come January. And today their stock level was pretty good including a few boxes of 22's.

YMMV at your local store but it won't hurt to ask.

I got a similar explanation from a guy at the Glendora Wal-Mart.

Apparently Wal-Mart is driven by money. Who knew?

Yeah I picked up 10 boxes of Win white box 55 grain at the Madera Rd Walmart(Still can't believe we have 3 Walmarts in little ol Simi) a couple days ago.

Had to hunt someone down to get help but she took my ID for the first time to purchase.

They won't have to change much as far as cabinets-as all the ammo except for shotgun has as far as I remember been locked in the case.
Just have to add some cabinets for the shotgun ammo.

California will require ammo to be behind a wall/counter next year.

I need to find a Sanctuary 2A city where I can be an Undocumented Ammunition Purchaser

I previously had a similar conversation nearly identical to yours and they confirmed the same; however, when we got around to discussing the background check aspect that arrives later down the line, more than one Walmart ammo counter person anticipated that may be when Walmart corporate finally ceases ammo sales in CA. Regardless of being unprepared for that (because they are not set up as a gun store is to access the state's system) but both don't see Walmart going that far to support ammo sales.

(As it is, the Walmarts within LA City don't sell ammo due to LA's fingerprint requirement for ammo purchases.)

Of course this is merely speculation on the part of employees, but they seemed rather confident throwing that out there as if that was something previously discussed, even to lower level floor employees.

WOW sounds like the same guy @ our Colton Wal-Mart. A guy that really loves his job selling ammo.

They ask for ID at my Walmart for age requirements, rings up the same way for booze. Their ammo has been in a glass case since I can remember.

they will probably put all your info into the system and have detailed files on all your ammo purchases

and supply all your info, name & address, date of purchase, caliber, number of rounds, etc to your local law enforcement.

FWIW, Big 5 has required ID and thumbprint with ammo purchases for the past few years. I don't know if it is a Big 5 policy or required per city of L.A. (both Big 5's I bought from were in Mid-Wilshire & Reseda)
