Was in the Simi Valley Walmart today (buying some ammo of course) and had a quick chat with the guy behind the sporting goods counter. For those who have been in there before you'll know him as the guy who has been there for years and can calculate your total including the sales tax down to the penny, in his head, before he even starts ringing you up.
In any case, I asked what the plan was going to be in January and he replied that he has already jumped through the requisite hoops to continue to sell ammunition and all one needs to do is cough up their driver's license and you're good to go. In fact he asked for my license with today's purchase which was something new to me at least. This I assume is the way it will be until the background check system comes online etc. etc. etc.
So, according to the guy at the counter, the Simi Walmart will be pretty much business as usual come January. And today their stock level was pretty good including a few boxes of 22's.
YMMV at your local store but it won't hurt to ask.
