    North San Diego..

Hey everyone... I'm new to the sport and should be finishing up my AR as soon as the parts arrive...

I live in Escondido and I'm wondering are there any outdoor ranges within driving distance that don't require NRA membership... not to get all political but Im just not a fan of their tactics... and I dont want to get into a pissing contest about why I should join etc.. I just wanna shoot!

The Escondido Fish and Game range requires a membership just to get on the wait list as does the Rainbow range.

I'm a DOD civilian contractor and heard a rumor that I might be able to use the range at MCAS Miramar or Pendelton

    Thanks in advance..

Pala outdoor range is all steel but the hours leave much to be desired. It can get crowed as well but when you are there its awesome!

The liberal see's the glass as half full and tries to take more.
The conservative see's glass as half empty and tries to keep it that way.
I'm with the people on the side just pouring water in the glass trying to get a drink!

The best way "not to get all political" is to ask about local outdoor ranges in general, then eliminate those that don't fit your politics. The problem being that when you eliminate shooting ranges based on politics, you ARE getting all political and you ARE making political decisions.

So, do you want to go out and just shoot, or do you want to get political?

If you just want to shoot, Rainbow is a great range. It allows drawing, rapid fire and all sorts of action shooting. You can set up your own steel and there is a small range that you can have for yourself and work on movement and shooting on the run. It hosts steel match every second Saturday of the month and weekly trap shoots. The trap machine is mechanical and slow, but a good practice.

However, one of the owners is a woman. Some object to shooting at the range because it's woman-owned, some because it's insured by the NRA...

Check out South Bay Rod & Gun www.sbrgc.org

Might be a little far from you but it matches your wants and needs except it's down in Dulzura.

^This is what I was going to suggest.^

Annual membership is not required. But, for $100 for an adult, you get year round access to 4 ranges. You can shoot out to 300-yards on range 6. It is $25 for the day without a membership. If you like it, you can go back to the front and pay the remaining $75 to get the annual membership. So in other words, you can try before you commit.

This place is pretty loose with safety. So keep a watchful eye out during cease fire periods.

I think there's a rifle club up around Henshaw somewhere.

                  +1

EFGA allows you apply without a NRA membership and get a NRA membership when you are accepted.

I too don't believe in the NRA politics, but shooting at a range has higher priority than not giving $$$ to the NRA.

Rainbow, SBR&G, Pala. Poway has an indoor 100 yard range.

Otherwise you’re heading to the desert.

Politics aside OP, some ranges require NRA memberships to get breaks on their insurance policies. Ours does and that was the reason given when someone asked in a membership meeting. Maybe just think of it as part of the membership dues or use fees.

Without the magazine subscription an NRA yearly membership is $10. That doesn't buy a 6 pack of beer today.

If you want to purchase guns or ammo thru the CMP they require you to belong to an affiliated club. EF&G is affiliated. Don't know which other ranges in SD county are, but buying from CMP can be important.

Poway has a 100 indoor range and programmable carriers. Pala is has a lot of variety all outdoors. Shoot up hill at 600 yards does get you well aquatinted with your ballistic calculator

Rainbow requires NRA membership to join, and I'm glad they do.

Your words ring true... and I knew that by asking the way I did it would cause some... "Ruffling of feathers" that said..... without debating pros (and there are some I know) and cons (and I know there are some) about membership

...I just want to shoot... but on my own terms...

Ive been to the Poway indoor range.. its really nice.. but its indoors...

                              Whats a "CMP".
