Hope you are not flying into and out of New York City.
TSA requires handguns to be unloaded in a locked hard case. Ammo separate in their factory box. To be on the safe side check with your airlines. Be safe.

If you are, my suggestion would be to leave the pistol at home, because if for some reason you get stuck at JFK or LaGuardia for any reason and have to reclaim your luggage, you could be in a world of hurt.

Take it easy everybody. To the OP, first go The the airline carrier’s website and read what their requirements are for transporting an unloaded handgun. It’s pretty easy as I and thousands upon thousands of others do it annually, all over this country. Also, TSA explains how to do it on their website as well.

As far as New York goes, google is your best friend.

Make sure you have no magazines over 10 rounds.

As for the handguns, in a locked container (NOT TSA locks). Go to the counter (sometimes you can use the staff at the curb IF they are airline employees). Declare and unloaded firearm to them. Make sure you have a TSA lock to put on the luggage after they have you fill out the form that will be taped to the outside of the locked container in the luggage.

The airline will tell you where and how long to wait for the TSA to clear the luggage. They might want the key to open the gun case if they need confirmation.

On the other end, your luggage SHOULD come out with the normal luggage - if not, check with baggage services.

Trailerpark Trash....I don't think Google will tell folks that even if you followTSA's guide lines one can step into deep dodo when leaving the city.
My son flew into NY a couple months ago from California. Locked hard case,no ammo, unloaded. Declared it in California. No issues.
But..on his return from NY he again declared it at the ticket counter per TSAs guide lines and he was arrested for having a handgun within the city.
Its going to cost him 10-15 K to resolve this. He never carried it within the city. Folks do not take firearms into NY city. Happens all the time.

Non tsa locks on the firearms cases and declare at airport sign waiver and put in firearms case go to tsa wait couple minutes while the decide to inspect or not . Lock the case and go board aircraft. When you get destination get from baggage either caroussel or baggage office. I travel with firearms several times a year.

I just flew last month with a hard-sided case, non-TSA locks on the case and then just to be extra safe I secured the case to the inside of my checked bag. TSA lock on the outside of the bag. Probably overkill but that's not a place I'm willing to take chances. As others have mentioned ammo separate from the firearms and obviously unloaded. When I flew they didn't check anything they just asked me if everything was unloaded. Have a safe trip!
