I have an aero 308 and currently have a 1-6x24 primary arms acss reticle. I'm planning on changing out because at 600 yards it's just not cutting it for me. I've looked into the 6-24x50 and 4-14x44 scopes. Looking for opinions on this. Is 6-24 too much or will 4-14 be good enough at 600. I'm not doing the whole 1000 yard. Thanks for reading.

Never can have TOO much imho lol. Depends what the difference in the optics is."Men sleep peacefully in their beds at night because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf."

When shooting from position I like about a 16 power on the top end. On the other hand I have a 36 power on my 25 yard benchrest air rifle. That would be a 1152 power at 800 yards if you wanted the same sight picture I see at 25 yards.sigpicComment

First I'd strongly suggest a First Focal Plane scope. That will help keep things much simpler for you if you take my advise here...
I can turn my 6-24 power down to 16. I can not turn my 4-16 up to 24. If you have a FFP scope you'll find yourself setting the magnification to what's best for the shot. Most of the time with a SFP, you'll want to crank the power all the way up to make sure your reticle's measurement is correct. Mirage, FOV, close up targets, all are much harder to work on with full magnification.
4-16 scopes are good if your doing a lot of large steel plate shooting with changing positions. However if your looking to get smaller groups and be more precise, the extra magnification helps. The down side to a 6-24 is the extra weight. But again if your shooting prone or from a bench mostly, the extra weight doesn't matter. If your wanting to run n gun, save the weight.Comment

I shoot steel out to 1200-yards and have 2 rifles I use, a heavy Surgeon 591SA and a lighter Rem. 700 PSS, the Rem. 700 sports a US Optics SN3 3.2-17x44.
NorCalFocus gives you some good advice above, if you’re planning on walking/carrying your rifle save the weight, 16x, 17x, 18x is good enough out to 1200-yards IMO.

+1 on Nightforce. I have one on each of my 50BMG rifles and they are great. They are not cheap but you will not get good glass for cheap.A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

My wife uses VV 6-24.
At 24, the 600 yard target is visible enough to see your groups on steel.Hobbies: bla, bla, bla... Bought a Mosin Nagant... Guns, Guns, Guns...Comment

got a mark 4 4.5-14x50 on a .308 rem build got it for like 700 bucks on black friday couple years back.
shot out to 600 yards all day no problems could probably stretch further as it is pretty clear.
This year black friday gonna try n snag a nightforce NSX 5.5-22x50 for a new remington 5-r .308 build.. hoping to get it for close to half off.
the time is coming to get a good deal.
if you use full magnification all the time and are not going past 600 i wouldn't worry about a FFP. You could get away without it for sure, and with less magnification, the 14x.
i'm no pro this is just my experience.. above posts i would agree with the more being better, it just gets expensive. I have heard bad things about clarity on vortex vipers on higher magnifications past 24x..
why spend 2000 on a china viper wen you can get a Japanese nightforce? seems a no brainer although I have heard vortex customer service is on par..
however almost all companies outsource lenses these days from what i have read, including Leopold. crazy these days.. not sure about Nightforce maybe someone could chime in on that.Comment

Razor HD scopes are manufactured in Japan
Vipers are made in Philippines
Diamondbacks are made in Philippines as well
Crossfire scopes are produced in China
bet u a buck all the lenses come from china.. maybe not
not 100% but ima say that nightforce may make their own lenses??
after even more inspection:
