Check the county regulations. In sac county, there are areas within the county where you can’t shoot. In addition, you have to be 150 yards from a structure (house, shed, barn, etc). Neighbors can call and complain about the noise. You can’t shoot over a road. You would probably need at least 10 acres? In addition to a dirt back stop, I’d put some type of bullet trap out for easy disposal of lead.

Start with a google search of the City and shooting

Call local PD and ask them about local city, county or state ordinances/ rules

Look for a forum that covers where you want to buy
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
          (thanks to Jeff Cooper)

No you can't. That is all L.A. County so you are flat out of luck on plinking but I believe you can hunt.

Look to Kern County which is also in the Antelope Valley.

                Good luck!

If it works out, a lot of CGers will be your best friend.

                Sorry, not sorry.

In LA County: A person shall not shoot, fire or discharge, and a person, firm or corporation shall not cause or permit to be shot, fired or discharged, any rifle, shotgun, pistol, revolver or firearm in the general direction of any house, camp or place of human habitation, or in the general direction of any public highway, road, street, way, park or premises, unless the place from which such rifle, shotgun, pistol, revolver or firearm is shot, fired or discharged is at least one-half mile distant from such house, camp or place of human habitation, or is at least one-half mile distant from that portion of such public highway, road, street, way, park or premises toward which such rifle, shotgun, pistol, revolver or firearm is shot, fired or discharged. The exception in Section 13.66.010 to destroying or killing any predatory or dangerous animal does not apply to this section.

Half a mile by half a mile is only 160 acres. Ouch.

Phelan is in San Bernardino County. According to the San Bernardino County Shooting map the area around Phelan is designated either:

                    1) Closed to all shooting except shotguns firing shot no larger than 1/2 the diameter of the bore.

                    or

2)Shooting of firearms permitted for lawful hunting only. Target shooting in designated areas only.

The nearest shooting area for target shooting is off Hodge Road near Barstow.

This should be made into a flyer and posted at all the minimarts and crack houses in La County. Maybe the bad guys will read it and stop breaking this law. Oh wait the problem is guns how silly of me to blame people who break the law.

Having private property to shoot on is the greatest thing on the planet. Do whatever you can to make it happen. You'll make lots of friend who will kiss your ***.

Check all the regulations, county, city, and state, but do it discreetly - it's usually better to ask forgiveness than to seek permission.
I'm not that happy to see you - It's a gun.

You are probably going to have a hard time finding property to shoot on in SOCAL within a reasonable commute distance to/from Santa Clarita...you could always buy some small plot out in the middle of the desert for cheap though.

Kern County may be your best option though...

He said no neighbors. He won't be shooting in the general direction of habitation. Don't you people read OP's?
