Going to Front Sight next month- any advise?

Going to front sight next month and take a 4 day defensive handgun course. Planning on taking my xd tactical in 9mm for a primary and my sig 229 in 40 for a back up.

As for gear I have gone with an uncle mikes holster and mag holders. I ordered Trudgen's Glo TFX pro sights. Should be here next week. Going to get them installed and sighted in next weekend hopefully. Purchased electronic hearing protection as required. I have all the other "stuff" for the course.

I have read through the requirements and download and read the student handbook from Front Sight. I am looking for any other things that may not be mentioned such as a good place to stay, things to look out for on the course or things they found helpful. Haven't been to a shooting school but have been through driving schools so looking for some very quick improvements to what I do right and correction for what I do wrong.

My son will be taking the kids class for the 4 days also. Now if I can just get the owner of that place to stop calling every 15 minutes I would be ok...(Front Sight JK)

definitely be there early when the gates open. people line up early to get in and usually classes are more crowded in the wintertime when the weather is better.

and just have fun. We will be there in a few weeks for the skill builder.

If you shoot a lot definitely go for distinguished graduate as that is the only way you can take the next evolution of classes.

Also if you are a proficient shooter to begin with just put your shots on target. They push weaver stance but don't care how you stand if you show proficiency.

I like staying at the Nugget in Pahrump
The dinner buffet usually has OK food but there is always seems to be 1 item that is 5 star. Bring snacks for your time off the firing line.
Make sure to buy an UpLULA for loading your magazines. it will make your life a lot easier.

If you are really cheap like me, you can spend about $12 per night and tent camp in an RV park. Grassy area with trees, free showers and free laundry.

I think I shot about 700 rds in my 4 day class.

Dress in layers.
You'll see lots of unfired rounds on the ground, if it's not yours, leave it there.

+1 on the UpLula.

Bring 4 or 5 mags and regularly reload while not on the line.

Personally, I bring a Maxpedition dump pouch (in addition to the 2 mag belt carrier) for the ammo, mags and Uplula and hang it from a D ring on my pants. Most others fish these out of pockets. Bottom line - what ever floats your boat

The other thing I could recommend is bring shooting gloves. My hands dry out like crazy there and by the end of the first day I'm bleeding. So I bring gloves and at least use one on my support side hand for most of the time.

Temperature can vary up to 30 degrees an hour. Wear a warm base later, a thinsulate layer, and a thin windbreaker. Also have gloves. You'll be putting on and taking off clothes all day.

Stay hydrated. Bring snacks like fruits and nuts or protein bars to stay alert and absorb all the info they give you.

Go to sleep early

It’s the desert so dehydration can be an issue if you have allergies and mouth breath or are not use to the dry climate.

Dehydration is not as much of an issue this time of year but make sure you are urinating enough. If you are not going enough, you are not taking in enough fluids


SPF 15 or 30 chapstick

Good electronic earmuffs.
Spare batteries for electronic earmuffs.


Do follow the drypractice rules and spend 30 minutes in 2 15 minute segments dry practicing each night. 15 min before dinner and 15 min after dinner
Reloads
Emergency reload
Type 1-3 malfunctions.
