How Many Are Old Enough to Remember When?

Picked up an issue of Guns Magazine from August 1959 at a yard sale today and looking at the ads I flashed back to when I was a kid and used to drool over all of the gun ads and the low prices (even then) that you could pick up firearms on mail order. Funniest thing is that many of the best prices came from dealers in Chicago, Los Angeles and New York. I always wanted one of the Springfield 1903's but even $28 was hard to come up with then.

For your walk down memory lane...

I remember those ads, but wasn't a "gun nut" then.

      That's so awesome!

In my old Big Bear place there is an old paper from 1961 used as underlayment for the fireplace hearth you can see from down below. The best I can tell from the font type it's from the Herald Examiner. I can't see the header to know for sure it's on top of a board, but the page sure reminds me of their layout. Anyway, there's a 38 special for $38 in one of the ads.
Buy made in USA whenever possible.

Too young (1981). I remember my father telling me he paid $300 for one his Gold Cup's in the 70's and like $275 for the other. When I was a kid (88-89), I remember walking into a hardware store and seeing a Colt 1911 for $350 NIB. I thought those prices were cheap At this same hardware store I remember seeing a Uzi, but I don't remember seeing a price for how much they cost.

My S&W 686. I paid $124.95 . This held its value more than a assualt rifle.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.
I really miss the good old Pomona Gun Shows.

As I recall, I think there were ads for .22s in Boys Life (a Boy Scout magazine).

I feel a little younger now. I was only 6 in 1959 - too young to know I was a gun nut. I just remembered an old "The Fugitive" episode - one of my favorites. A group of kids around 7 or 8 years old (including a young Kurt Russell) pooled all their candy change & ordered a military rifle from a catalog - it was around $6.00. It arrived in a wooden crate.

In 1959 I had a Remington .22 single shot rifle my dad gave me. And all the barrels full of milsurps and magazines for average Joe prices at the numerous army/navy surplus stores.

The ad for the Colt 45 at 34.95 would be 3.00 short of the payment I was paying for used '56 ford I was buying at the time.

At that time, wheels out ranked firearms for purchase; but didn't stop me from looking.

Got a subscription to Guns & Ammo in 1966 (2 years after I got Hot Rod). Couldn't wait until I was 18 to buy some of the deals. Turned 18 in 1968 same year as the GCA ended mail order - best laid plans failed.
