Heard a new "featureless" regulation today

I DO NOT wish to spread fud. This is just an interaction I had this morning.

Went to a local indoor shooting range today. I already hate going to indoor or regulated ranges in general, but I needed to sight a rifle in so I thought I'd go since we're still under fire restrictions.

Anyway, as I'm leaving the owner of the range/gun shop starts talking to me about featureless and how my grip isn't a legal option per the opinion of DOJ (it's a magpul grip made into a fin grip which the fin goes up about an inch above the highest exposed portion of the trigger).

He then goes on to say that if you bought a complete rifle before Jan 1, 2017 it has to be registered as an Asalt Weapun because it came with a BB installed and all the features. You were not "allowed" to convert it to featureless because it was brought into ca with a BB and somewhere on the DROS paperwork it says it is compliant with CA and the serial number or sku number or something correlates with it being a BB rifle?

Said the DOJ has told him this over the phone and in person. I've NEVER heard of this before. Has anyone heard of this? I've never purchased a complete rifle, only lowers and assembled them.

nope, maybe he is confusing regs for bringing in guns for sale vs personally owned guns.

as for the grip fin, DOJ would never make a ruling concerning legality of the grip fins. they like to keep it vague so local DA's can make their own case to arrest/charge.

You should ask that owner if his job involves enforcing AW laws.

Also btw. My grip is a magpul with a slot milled down the back of it with the fin pressed through and epoxied inside the grip and out. More permanent than a wrap for sure.

Well it's a ghost grip. Patent pending.

Tell him that you'll be sure to mention to all of your hundreds (maybe thousands) of gun-club friends with featureless rifles that the owner of that range might give them a hard time if they go there, so they should find a different range to spend their money. That will make him think twice about spouting off FUD.

                          he would probably say "yes"

I wonder what type of info pay ranges keep on customers? do they also record serial numbers? make , model, etc or supply your info to local LE?

This one closest to me only takes down name and date. If someone wanted anything more than that I'd not go.

Sounds like the owner has been reading posts by a certain Calguns member.
