To heat treat it I just heat it up with a torch until it starts changing color (to purplish) and then let it slowly cool right?

OMG NO!

It has to cool rapidly, not slowly! Dunking it in water or oil is the right way to do it. I personally prefer oil since it's void of loose oxygen that can lead to rust.
