Well where is your Father in Law?
Either way here are your 2 choices,
He lives out Of State
He ships the rifle your to your local FFL and you go DROS it and pay FFL fees and wait your 10 days.
As long as it's not some AW Listed Shotgun, then there is no big deal to this.
Or He lives in State
He sends it/hands it to your Wife. That's it. Remember that if he lives, say in NorCal and you In SoCal, he can mail it to you via USPS(this applies to long guns only)
Then under California Law if you're married it becomes yours. If you want you can then send in the DoJ Intra Familial form and $19, but that is not required for a long gun.
Here it is anyways.

Ok. He lives in cali so ppt is no big deal. Standard 870 remington. I just dont know If its still registered to his father who is deceased. Find out more later. just trying to be on top of things. Thanks for the help. I'll post again with more info.Well where is your father in Law?

EDIT
12Gauge got me thinking "out of the box" a little.
Another option is if he lives in State. Is have him give it to your wife(he can mail USPS it as long as he is in State). Your Wife sends in the DoJ form sends it in with $19 and that's it(takes about 3 months to get the confirmation letter). Under Cali law, it becomes community property, thus it becomes yours. If at a later time you want it to "officially" be your. Send in the Doj Form with $19
DoJ form.

Doesn't matter, once his Father Died it became his. Long guns are not registered via serial #'s. So there is no record of the exact shotgun in the system.
Just as when he gives it to your Wife, you are not required under law to send in the "registration" form.
Hence the Intra Familal exception to using a FFL.
Pleas go back and reread what I edited my post to say!!!! I fell victim to making a simple thing complex.Last edited by Vin496; 03-03-2009, 8:46 PM.I think it can be confirmed that an alien xenomorph is absolutely no match for good ole' Alabama black snake!

So its ok for him to give it to my wife and we legally use it for hunting/range use? He does not use it, but I wouldn't want to tell him his dad's rifle was taken by the game warden because it was not registered in my nameDoesn't matter, once his Father Died it became his. Why would it get taken?
READ #5
Long Guns are not registered with the serial #. If you are concerned of this somehow becoming a issue then send in the DoJ form I gave you the link to.I think it can be confirmed that an alien xenomorph is absolutely no match for good ole' Alabama black snake!

I know what to do now. Thank you everyone. Love this site!

If long guns are not registered with the serial # then how are they registered? Meaning, how does the government know who owns what? When you buy a rifle or shotgun from say Big 5 or wherever, doesn't the gun get registered in the process?
I'm not trying to be a jerk. I seriously don't know, so am asking. Thanks.Comment

With the exception of assault weapons and NFA firearms, long guns are not registered in CA.If long guns are not registered with the serial # then how are they registered? Make, model, and serial number is not listed on the DROS when you transfer a long gun. So, CA DOJ does not get that information.
Make, model, and serial number is listed on the 4473. Which is kept with the FFL dealer.
You can voluntarily register firearms with the CA DOJ.
You do so by sending a Firearms Ownership Record form along with $19 per firearm being registered to CA DOJ BOF.Last edited by Quiet; 03-08-2009, 5:20 PM.sigpic
