State Farm: No Coverage For Ammo

If memory serves, most of the losses in that Oakland event were way way underinsured. Lots of litigation to sort it out.Originally posted by Jefferson PreparedDid you have issues establishing the value of the home or the "everything in it?"
I've had State Farm for decades and recently had a fire total a rental property. They quickly paid the $600,000 replacement cost, another $30,000 for asbestos cleanup, and a year's worth of lost rent. 20 years ago I totalled a car and they paid promptly then too.
On the other hand, I don't use them for specialty stuff like my classic car.
Your experience with State Farm is more typical. That big fire was a wake up call for every insured in ca.Comment

The statement in bold is not true. My computer was stolen (along with my HK 45) a while back. Not only State Farm covered my computer but paid for about $1K worth of software that I had to buy again (had receipts)."... when a man has shot an elephant his life is full"- John Alfred Jordan

NO but I did insurance construction work ie.. Fire and flood for 11 years and talked with every single customer and even though numbers were very few maybe 5 none were compensated for lost ammo and some not even for the firearms amongst many other items. Not saying it would never happen but odds are very very slim. This was in California.Comment

I have State Farm, we ran into this issue with guns in general. My state
Farm guy was pretty cool, explained getting a generic rider policy for specialized high value items was cheaper than a Line Item for guns. I ended up just optioning an $18k rider and providing a thumb drive with photos to document what it covers.Buying a safe and sane firework is like paying a hooker for a hug. I do not see the appeal in it.Comment

Ammunition is covered, subject to your deductible just like all personal property. Reloading components are not covered. Keep your receipts in a safe place that can't burn up or stolen with the ammo.Comment

Read your policy, I've paid for ammo and reloading components as a claims adjuster (not State Farm though). If you are in the middle of claim, they are required to show you in writing exactly why a claim or item is excluded as a previous poster mentioned.
Also read any policy sublimits. The sublimity title may say $5,000 for theft of "firearms" but if you read the policy definition of a "firearm", you may find that it also includes scopes, ammo, holsters, cases, reloading components, etc. Also note that the sublimit only applies to theft, all other covered causes of loss are covered up to the full limit unless otherwise excluded.Comment
