Said up to 5k for guns but zero on ammo. Is that common? Renters insurance. Agent compared ammo to the software on a computer saying "if someone steals your computer we cover that but not the programs on it".

I have statefarm. I think anything over 5K you need a personal articles policy. They don't insure ammo,I went round and round with my agent on that. Ive got a personal articles policy on sporting goods for 30K. Beef up your numbers for the roster, import bans and gear, mags. They also don't insure mags, but theres a way to do.Comment

And if you ever have a claim, good luck collecting. After the Oakland Hills firestorm, trying to get State Farm to reimburse us for the loss of our entire home and everything in it was like pulling teeth. Didn't matter we paid our premiums for 20 years. With that said, I had a small claim with Geico for my truck recently. Dealing with them was very smooth and easysigpic

So I just read a State Farm renters policy.
Dumb analogy by the agent. You can back up or replace software for free. Ammo, not so much.
Just seek a separate policy for your firearms and related stuff. You'll have two deductibles for some losses, but at least you'll have decent coverage.
While it may still be a good idea to purchase a separate policy for firearms and accessories, I didn't see ANY exclusions for anything related specifically to firearms accessories or equipment etc.
There are always limits for theft on firearms. Every company and every policy I've ever read includes one.
Read your policy (as others have written) and request that your agent show you where your policy either covers or excludes ANYTHING you may be concerned about.Comment

Check with other providers - you may get different answers. I never tried to insure ammo because it is an expendable item, but maybe some providers will insure if it's a supply that you've set aside for long-term storage.
It is kind of weird - my homeowner's policy covers spoiled food in my fridge as part of the "personal property" coverage. I would think that ammo would fall under that same category.Comment

That sucks on both counts. Unless the software is something you wrote yourself, you paid for it and suffered a loss. Keep shopping.Comment
