I use an old toolbox with a small padlock. This has the added benefit of not looking like a gun case.

Backpack with lockable zippers.

That is exactly what I use. A First Tactical half day pack with a luggage lock through the holes in the zippers.

It's a little bit more complicated, if I read the law correctly. If you inform LEO you have a gun in the bag, they are authorized to check, if it's loaded or not

You can't even imagine how many people talk themselves into a trouble at a regular LEO encounter. Also, don't underestimate the officer's interrogation practices and skills.

I had a couple of very strong Pelican cases that I re-purposed from my photo days. New foam.. and G2G. Those things are tough, and with a decent combo lock, no cop will ever be able to show that you could still open a locked one. They are pricey for new, but used ones show up here and there.

If you're just going to the range and back, you don't really HAVE TO BUY anything.

Just lock your backpack, range bag, or the tupperware that the gun came in...with one of the gun locks you bought the gun with. You don't have to HIDE anything.

IF you're GOING TO LEAVE IT UNATTENDED in the car for any time, then look for something lockable to the car.

I put my pistols in soft cases and then place them in a gym bag, locking the gym bag zipper with a small cable combo lock.

Pretty much what I do to. Anything that doesn't look like a gun case (unless it is in a trunk) works for me.
