Transporting handgun without a trunk "SUV type vehicle" (Recommend a case)

Hey can anyone reccomend a container or lock box like a small one for me to transport my handgun to and from the range since I have no trunk. Maybe something on amazon?

Briefcase with combination lock. Police will need a warrant to make you open it.

You could carry a pistol and loaded mags in the same locked combination briefcase as long as the magazine is not in the pistol and the gun isn't loaded

I put my handguns in softshell locking case in back of the back seat. Ammo in separate range bag...unloaded mags and guns.

I have a couple buddies that are CHP, they think that works just fine.

No law governing ammo except on school grounds.

Ammo can be roped to the outside of the trunk lid and driven past the Capitol legally.

It's not rocket science. There are thousands of options. What works for me may not work for you.

A $20 briefcase from Staples.
Any of the Gunvault products... do you want to use a key or mechanical combination, or do you trust electronics with a fingerprint reader or electronic combination?

How much space do you have to conceal the box?


The transportation law simply states that it has to be in a secure locking container other than the glove box or utility compartment.

The storage law requires that it be locked up in a secure locking container and that container be placed out of sight in the interior of the vehicle (or in the trunk)

The briefcase idea works for transportation, but when you park, you'd need to toss a towel or jacket over it.

Your buddies may want to familiarize themselves with CHP policy:

I will be traveling to California and want to carry my weapon. I currently have a concealed weapon permit. How can I legally transport my weapon while driving through the state?

California law does not recognize concealed weapon permits from other states; therefore, they would not be held valid. If you wish to transport a handgun during your California visit, it should be carried unloaded in a locked container. In the absence of a suitable container, you may secure the unloaded handgun in the locked trunk of a passenger car. Ammunition may be kept in the same container or trunk, but the handgun must remain unloaded with no rounds in the cylinder and no loaded magazines in the magazine well.

Why? Is what he described not legal? Sure seems to be within the law from my understanding. I don't think it's a violation of law to keep the mags and ammo separate from the gun. They don't have to be, but it sure can't hurt if they are.
