Having trouble dropping the humidity inside my safe.

So I was reading that the ideal humidity is somewhere 45-55. I put a 12in Golden rod in my safe, and my humidity stayed around 60. Added a second golden rod, 18in, humidity stayed the same. Added two eva dry dehumidifiers, and it dropped to 59. Any idea what I could do to drop it a little more, or is that just Orange County humidity and thats how it is gonna stay?

The humidity has been crazy high in OC lately due to the weather, about 70% in my area. I have 1 large & 1 small Golden rod, 2 EVA's, and 3 Dry-Packs 750 Gram Silica Gel Canisters and I am getting it to 55-60%. (Its 45cu/ft fyi).

It is monsoon season so humidity is high.

I would not worry about it. Your wood stocks may draw in some moisture but your goldenrod is already drying out your stocks when it is not humid.

I don't think your humidity level is dangerous to the metals.

What are you using to measure the humidity? I used a basic hygrometer calibration kit to properly calibrate my humidity monitor. It had been reporting around 8% higher out of the box.

Not that that's necessarily the problem, but you might be trying to fight humidity that isn't there.

I don't know how often you are opening your safe to check the humidity levels but it takes quite sometime for the levels to drop. The more you open to check it may have not had a chance to actually drop the humidity. I'd leave it then open it in the morning so it has a chance to work....not sure if you are already doing that or frequently checking?

All joking aside, another factor I don't see people mentioning about this topic in general,
is the salt content of the air.
For instance, if you lived very close to the ocean I think your firearms are more of a risk to rusting (compared to just a normal high humidity area) if they are not protected.

Someone once said that it's the drywall used as a fire barrier in the walls of the safe that retains some moisture. It's rare that the hygrometer in my safe displays less than 65% even with my 18-inch rod.

I live 3 miles from the coast and about 10 miles south of the Santa Monica mountains. I like it when the ambient humidity drops due to an offshore flow or a santa ana wind condition. It's then that I might see 45 - 50% humidity in my safe...

I was gonna suggest to the guys who are having humidity issues to go browse a Texas forum to see how you boys handle it. The air is so thick out there I feel like I have to chew it before I can breathe it.

If you have warmth, you have air movement....
this will prevent rust


Unless you seal the safe and purge the safe with nitrogen, you will have moisture

And that is OK

Correct, I do not have rust issues. Just wanted to be sure I was taking reasonable precautions to make sure it doesn't happen in the future because being completely honest, I don't go shooting nearly as often as I used to and that safe gets opened once a month or less.

I live less than a mile from the beach in OC and I have a cheap metal cabinet in the garage full of broken/parts guns. All I have in there are 3 buckets of Damp-Rid from Home Depot and I have no rust issues. I did tape the vents and seams, but not around the door. Same deal in my safes, just with a good coating of T9 and a gun sock.
