    Drawing from concealed

Had a great time shooting with our new steel target set. One of the experiments we did was to shoot our carry weapons with a match timer.

One pistol I tried was a Walther PPK/S. Never really timed shooting with it. It is my go to pistol for IWB carry around the home and business because its so small.

We tried 2 shots, from concealed, IWB holster, to a 2/3 IDPA steel target at 10 yards.

First try, 5.3 seconds. Oh, hell no! What just happened?

I just realized, that switch safety into DA eats up a helluva lot of time. You basically have to switch off the safety, try to keep it on target whilst working on what feels like a 10 pound rigger. On a few more tries, I got it to 3.87.

Comparatively, I can shoot and hit a target with my G19, chambered and cocked, from an OTW holster in 1.7 secs. Its a much better holster too.

Best time with a loaded shotgun, muzzle down to a target 10 yards away, 0.55 secs.

Lotsa fun. Can't wait to go again.

Great way to find out what works and what doesn't!

This is why I carry with the safety off on my PX-4 EDC. It's a DA on the first shot, SA on the second and follow on shots. Not fumbling with the safety as you draw simplifies things a lot.

Having the safety off, the PPK/S will fire when dropped

Doesn't that mean that it can't be on the roster?

It's not. That's why it costs 800-1000 bucks for a 400 dollar handgun in CA.

Op clean up the trigger and action.

              Then practice with it more.

I practice with my shield in the safe position. I draw and sweep the safety as I present the gun. Train to it and it wont add any time.

I'm sure you are correct. I was just not used to shooting it that way since I just got my steel set up, and ranges will not let you draw. I recently became a member of a club and will be getting in more practice. Also, having no practice with DA quick draw and fire before, I had no appreciation how surprising a 10 pound trigger in a rushed situation.

Use the safety OR the double action feature....not both. That is common wisdom as far as I am concerned.

The DA pull is supposed to act like a safety. If you use a safety switch, you need to practice switching it off during the draw.

It is my opinion that it is overkill to use both....use one or the other.........and practice practice practice.

Practicing with the timer is critical. That's the only way to have an objective measure of how well you're doing and to track your progress.

You are neither first nor last to have a "Oh, hell no! What just happened?" moment. You'll be amazed what dry fire practice can do to your draw, reload, split and transition times.

I'd thought about it. I am not comfortable carrying it chambered without some sort of firing pin block. I'll deal with the safety instead.

I do all kinds of competition. Rifles, pistols and shotguns. Never tried it with DA. I do not yet own a CZ. Practicing SD drills with the Walther PPK/S was enlightening to say the least.

I will revisit the manual of arms on the gun, maybe I can learn some new tricks.

Where has that test been documented?
