    Conceal Carry at SFO

Just wondering I have to pick up the girlfriend at SFO and I was wondering what I am limited to in terms of my conceal carry. I have a CA ccw and just want to know how I can legally carry to the airport when picking her up.

    Thank you

I carry there all the time... inside, right up to the ticket counter, and edge of secure areas. No big deal.

Just don't want to end up in cuffs for doing a quick pick up. Wasn't sure about any special rules or regs.

      Thank you sir

Interesting. For once, carrying in San Francisco is better than in Orange County! For SNA (John Wayne/Orange County) airport, the county code: Title 2 Public Facilities/Division 1 Airports/Article 5 Airport Operations/Sec. 2-1-53 Rules of conduct/Paragraph i states that...

"No person, except peace officers, an authorized post office or Airport employee or a member of the armed forces of the United States on official duty, shall carry any weapon, explosive or flammable material on or about his person, openly or concealed, on the Airport without the written permission of the Airport Director. This Section shall not apply to persons carrying firearms in cases, broken down or unloaded when said firearms are being transported by air. For the purposes of this section, a weapon includes all those listed in California Penal Code Sections 12000-12654."
With the California DOJ Penal Code: PART 1. OF CRIMES AND PUNISHMENTS [25 - 680] /TITLE 7. OF CRIMES AGAINST PUBLIC JUSTICE [92 - 186.34] / CHAPTER 7. Other Offenses Against Public Justice [142 - 181] / Paragraph 3b, it states...

"It is unlawful for any person to knowingly possess, within any sterile area of an airport or a passenger vessel terminal, any of the items listed in subdivision (c)"
Where “sterile area” means a portion of an airport defined in the airport security program to which access generally is controlled through the screening of persons and property, as specified in Section 1540.5 of Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations.

I wonder if San Mateo Co. (SFO is technically there) has more restrictive regulations than the state like Orange Co. does?

You can always call and ask. I don't work anywhere near an airport so I've never investigated the issue. I can tell you I carry when picking ppl up from the airport. But I'm also a LEO so I'm not sure how that effects it.

If you look at that link, it certainly is a law. It is a county code. The county made a law, not just a rule. We may not like it, but the county appears to have done it.

Yes, BUT, many IAs require you to abide by local laws or ordinances as part of the CCW agreement you sign.

You should contact Spyder, he is one of members here and he is well versed in SFO CCW regulations.

Idk how he does it but he knows his stuff.

I don't know about being well versed, but there's a VERY amusing story I heard recently about a person who wound up behind a CBP checkpoint with an until-then lawfully carried and concealed loaded handgun and a box full of rifles, at the direction of a CBP LEO and that LEO's supervisor. There was some quick thinking and a decision to follow the lawful order of the officers, and some heavy concern from friends of this person, but it all turned out ok in the end. No one knows for sure what would have happened, had CBP known the whole story, and several sighs of relief were exhaled upon safe passage out of the area, with all firearms still in possession.

When I heard about the situation, I did some quick phone based google research for the person involved and didn't really come to an answer for that particular situation, but I do know that if a handgun is lawfully carried and concealed, parking garages and baggage claim and even check in areas SHOULD be no problem. But don't try and go past any checkpoints or get in to any lines that lead to a checkpoint, as being in line and leaving at the last minute can be viewed as suspicious and draw attention.

Also, if for some reason, somehow, the firearm is spotted or becomes discovered, expect a sheetstorm response, expect to be in handcuffs, and expect to do some explaining, just because of location (both SF and international airport). But, it should be legal. I am not a lawyer and don't try to be.
