OK cal gunners, I know this source is a known wing of the DEMOCRAT party. Its also known for fake news, misleading stories and ZERO credibility on important issues.
So lighten up and consider a stopped clock is correct twice a day. this story is posted for entertainment only.

That's only counting NFA registered firearms - machine guns, short barrel rifles, etc. It has almost no relevance to overall firearm ownership by state.

    Look at this instead http://www.businessinsider.com/gun-o...y-state-2015-7
    Revolvers are not pistols

pistol nouna handgun whose chamber is integral with the barrel
Calling a revolver a "pistol" is like calling a magazine a "clip", calling a shotgun a rifle, or a calling a man a woman.

I also noticed they were able to squeeze in all the scary names and places for some of the states.

There is an ATF statistic table for the past 10 years+ that is published. CA being the 2nd state in regards to firearms excluding NFA items right behind Kentucky which is #1. We have also been so for the past 5-6 years. Will post link once I find it.

I really don't see why anyone cares.

Suppose you could determine with a high degree of probability, that New York was the most armed state - say, an average of 10 guns per resident.

Do you suppose that information would change the actions of the government of New York? Would you plan to move there on the gun-ownership item alone?

Then, look at the data-collection for each of these studies. The one cited by CBS (from 2015) uses a telephone survey to get rates. Gun owners, seeing the treatment given to gun owners in the last 20 years, are going to be reluctant to reveal gun ownership to an anonymous telephone caller. Similarly, 'progressive' gun owners are also likely to deny ownership - can't have the social group think one is one of the bitter clingers...

I believe the ATF data suggested is the NICS counts, which is not very useful either. Some states use it for other things than gun purchases - KY runs NICS on every one of its CCW holders every month. And NICS checks are not run on a lot of person-to-person sales, which in many states are legal without an FFL.

Nobody knows for sure how many guns there are in the US as a whole; certainly nobody knows a breakout by state.

While the ATF's National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record is the only accessible list of its kind, it is not all-inclusive. NFA firearms only include the categories regulated by The National Firearms Act of 1934: machine guns, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns, suppressors, destructive devices like bombs and grenades, concealable devices with the ability to discharge a shot through the energy of an explosive, and any firearm with a bore over half an inch that has not been determined to have a legitimate sporting use.

While this list is lengthy, it does not include categories like pistols, which make up a large percentage of the guns in the U.S. As such, the total numbers of guns in each state would actually be much higher than the figures here. This gallery is a but a snapshot of some of the broader trends.

....why was this even published with such a glaring admission of it's inaccuracy? Stupid. Goes to show... good luck taking them from us.

Looks like useless data to gauge such a thing since it's only registered.

Every gun owner should know by now that CBS is anti-2A just like the rest of the MSM tards. I read the article yesterday, and while mildly interesting the numbers are WAY off because they only include "registered" guns.
sigpicC'mon man, shouldn't we ban Democracks from Cal-Guns? Or at least send them to re-education camps.

I thank each of you who helped me determine just how bad CBS really is and why only a really stupid person would watch read or listen to this pack of anti gun, anti american, make America suck again, (MASA) so called News Outlet! Yeah CBS Im referring to you.

That's not #2 in firearms, that's #2 in NICS (National Instant Criminal Background Check System) background checks, seen here https://www.fbi.gov/file-repository/...state.pdf/view

The number of NICS background checks is not a measure of the number of firearms in a state.

California requires background checks for almost every firearm transfer, including used guns. That really pumps up the number of background checks. California requires a background check almost every time one Californian transfers a used gun to another Californian. That counts as a NICS check, even though the transfer didn't increase the number of guns in California.

Meanwhile, most states don't require a background check for transfer of used guns between private individuals, so such a transfer doesn't generate a NICS check. That lowers the number of NICS checks in most states.

NICS checks in California reflect the amount of new and used guns being transferred. In most states they only reflect the number of new guns being transferred.

Also, NICS checks are performed for reasons other than firearm transfers, such as applications for concealed carry permits. The reason Kentucky leads the nation in NICS checks isn't because Kentucky has the most firearms, or the most firearm sales, but because

Dwayne Wurth, owner of Wurth Gun & Pawn in Paducah, said that high number likely is related to the state running monthly background checks on concealed carry holders.

“The state itself runs background checks on people who have concealed carry. They run those every month to make sure they are still law abiding citizens,” Wurth said. “That’s what they’re supposed to do to.”

The Federal Bureau of Investigations runs more background checks for Kentucky than any other state in the nation, which shows the state is keeping a close watch on gun buyers’ […]
So you really can't tell much about the number of guns in a state by looking at the number of NICS checks. California's high number of NICS checks is more a reflection of the fact that California requires a background check every time you transfer a gun, want to use a plastic shopping bag, or vote Republican.

That's just the number of NFA registered firearms - machine guns, SBRs, etc. It has almost nothing to do with the actual number of firearms in California. The real number is in the tens of millions.
