Thanks for all the help guys. Followed your guidance and came out great. Had the safe delivered yesterday and never even heard a creak. Ended up with a slightly lighter safe (around 1600 pounds) so a little less stress. Thanks again

Glad it all worked out. I'm not a structural engineer or a carpenter but the one thing I didn't see in the discussion above is whether adding the safe would make your home more susceptible to damage in a moderate earthquake. I live in snow country and as of 2008, the code required our roof to be designed for a 240 psf snow load assuming a moderate earthquake. Hopefully the reinforcements you put in will help keep the house on it's foundation if things start rocking and rolling.Comment

Good to hear you got your situation squared away OP.
I'm in a similar boat but don't see a way to accomplish what I want to do. Ideally I'd like to move a safe (that's a similar weight to what you have) upstairs in my house. I've got a glulam that spans the section of floor that I'd want to move the safe to, but I'm not willing to bet that it'll be sufficient enough. I'm going to have to get someone who knows a lot more than I do about structural engineering out to my place and have them look.As the great warrior poet Ice Cube once said "If the day does not require an AK, it is good."Comment

I guess I was pretty lucky about location and space when it came down to it. AT least it was accessible and I had room to move around. I am looking forward to staying out of the crawl space for a while - at least until all the bruises go away from smacking my head on the joistsGood to hear you got your situation squared away OP.
